No. All that is necessay is to assume that Olt will be better
offensively than marginally better than Schierholtz, or whoever
would be replaced in the outfield.

I think Reb is arguing that Bryant should be left at 3B because
of long-term results, that Schierholtz is only a short-term
consideration, someone who will be replaced by someone much
better in a year or two. Reb, I think is envisioning the
long-term benefits/liability of moving Bryant because of
       short-term considerations.
But the Cubs seem to really value having players capable of
playing multiple positions, and to the extent that there are
concerns about Bryant's ability to play 3B, they exist more in
terms of down the road than in the short term. The decision
whether to move him in the short term may well depend on their
judgment about whether they are likely to need to move him there
eventually. It may also depend on how sold they are not only on
Olt but perhaps Villanueva as well.
However, in any event, it seems likely that Baez will get to the
majors as soon as Bryant, so unless Baez moves Castro off of SS,
he may well be the guy who occupies 3B in the short term. We'll
just have to wait and see. And the one thing I'm confident of
is the ability of the guys in charge to make a more informed
decision on these things than us.

If, at some point the Cubs get outfielders that are better than
Olt, then Bryant can move back to third base.

Baez may move Barney rather than either Castro or Bryant.

It's amazing given how Olt was a consensus top 20 prospect 18
months ago that he seems to get no consideration as a
potentially important long-term piece. If Bryant gets hurt and
has a bad year as a result, will he be similarly dismissed next
       winter?

That certainly could be, if Baez proves to be adept at 2B, a
more technically difficult position that 3B. I'm guessing they
won't want to move him around the infield all that much, so IF
they do move him, I assume it will be to a position they think
       he's likely to stay at.

I agree that Olt remains a potential impact guy, Deeg, though I
think most of the reason people don't think of Olt as a
long-term impact player is based on doubts about his eyesight
problems (presumably the primary reason for his problems last
year) being truly corrected. If he shows he's 100% and starts
pounding the ball and playing excellent 3B, I expect he'll leap
back into the discussions about the future.

If, like Olt, he has an problem that many doctors say can not be
       fixed, he certainly will be.
