18 X 7 = 126. If Cuttler stays healthy that could be a good
deal. And if after 3 years at 18 they can just cut him and not
owe a dime

Again it's not that simple.
They could have given him a 14 million signing bonus that he
gets today but the 14 is spread to the cap in the next 7 years.
Then the remainder of the 54 guaranteed (40) is 13.3/year in
Salary for the first three years. Teams somtimes guarantee the
first couple years of salary in case there is a career ending
injury. That means he could get cut the after three years and
the remainder of his signing bonus gets accelerated into they
current cap year would be an 8 million dollar cap hit cut to rid
themselves of the reamaining 4 years of Salary. They already
paid him the 8 million as a signing bonus in the first year so
it wouldn't cost the team a dime. It would save them all the
remaining 4 years of salary though.
That would make it a 3 year contract for 54 million dollars.
All the guaranteed money.
It is all about how it is structured.

Or they go to Cutler and redo the remaining 4 years and give him
another signing bonus for those 4 years at a reduced
unguaranteed lower salary in his waining years. Or even shorten
the contract to 2 or 3 years.
That is how they get players to redo their contracts in later
years because their salaries are not Guaranteed.

It's actually pretty impressive how quickly and apparently
amicably the negotiations went.
Cutler seemed genuinely happy in the presser (not that $18 mil a
year wouldn't make anyone happy), said he never wanted to
explore any other options and that the Bears had made it clear
from the start that he was their guy long-term. Sounded
extremely happy with Trestman and excited to get to work on
making the offense better in Year 2.

I'm thinking Emery went along with McClellin because he could be
a 4-3 DE in the C2 or a 3-4 LB.
Would be nice if he could play the Colvin role of LB on rushing
downs and DE in the nickel.

I was stuck in the car most of today and was listening to the
discussions regarding the Cutler signings on the Sirius/XM NFL
channel. Most of the discussions were pretty positive. John
Madden thought it was the smart move and that you have to pay
the going rate or draft a new guy and he pointed out that
drafting at 14 is not going to give us shot at the top rated
prospects. He said that it would cost WAY too much to move up
high enough to get a top prospect. Rich Gannon thought it was a
very good move.Some others thought it was a fair deal but
nothing to get excited about either way. The only person I heard
that thought it was a bad move was Pat Kirwan. I don't know who
he is but he's the co-host with Jim Miller on the afternoon show
called Movin' the Chains. His biggest issue was what those
contract numbers would do for guys like Andy Dalton, Andrew
Luck, and Russell Wilson when their current deals are up. His
beef was that the Cutler deal just guarantees these guys a few
million more a year. That is not the Bears problem.

Pat Kirwin was a GM in the NFL for a short while. He wasn't
very good and the fact he is on radio tells me all I need to
know.
Anyone getting upset on contract is flat out silly. I was
listening to Waddle and Silvy on ESPN today. I believe I heard
Culter will have gotten 38 million by next March on this deal.
So the signing bonus must be large which I think is great since
its prorated over 7 years. My guess is something like 30 mil
signing bonus and probably 7, 8, 9 million annually guaranteed
salary for first three years. That would make it 54 million
guaranteed. That would make the cap hit around 11 mil a year.
Jay's cap hit this year was 10.4 mil, so we are paying 600K more
next year, another million the following, etc. This is a very
good deal for the Bears. Great job Emery, thank you Jay Cutler.
Win-win in my book.
Now lets get busy, cut Julius Pepper's ass and save 9.8 million
to use on spend on some guys that still can play worth their
contract.

Read the Trib report on the press conference, saw where there
was gush about how the defense played the first three games.
Bears gave up over 70 points in those games. that's ok with
these people? Gave up over 6000 yards of offense for the year.
6000 yards! That's ok? Who ever said 8-8 good for you. I
thought better. Stupid me. Redskins won how many games this
year? And one of them was against the Bear. I watched every
stupid game. All of them. And too many times the only player
on the screen was the opposition player piling up yards or
scoring. That's ok? There shouldn't be ANY gush for ANYTHING on
defense. Period. Oh, and launch that punter while your at it.
The only positive I saw was the restoration of a man's football
career, that promptly got benched. Obviously, results aren't the
determining factor for ANYTHING when it comes to the Bears.
A plague on all of them.
