Emery could just be playing possum saying the DL was all
injuries. No need to tip our hand ahead of the draft.
That's what I hope. For all we know he may blow up the entire
DL like he did the OL last year... but no sense letting the
other 31 teams know about that now.

he might also be tight lipped about the DC because he is waiting
to see what happens with Frazier.
If Marinelli goes to TB then Frazier could come here.

Besides who is to say that Emery wont pick up a FA DT like he
did with the Denver guy then drafted Bostic in the 2nd round?

YES!!!! We need to start amassing D talent, because the coffers
are empty.

We can thank Angelo for that. Michael Haynes, Jauron Gilbert,
Dusty Dvoracek, that Harrison guy, Gaines Adams, multiple misses
at S, etc.
Emery was forced to spend most of our resources last offseason
on offense (specifically OL and thank God he did), but this year
I expect him to open the checkbook on the other side of the
ball.
A draft pick and a FA signing at both DT and S (4 players total)
would be a good place to start and hopefully it goes deeper than
that.

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports Jay Cutler's seven-year deal is
worth $126 million, and includes $54 million guaranteed.

Ouch. Well so much for being able to cut ties with him in a
year or two.

Well... with those kind of terms... if there's no Superbowl (or
at least some very deep playoff runs) in the next 2-3 years,
Cutler will never see the end of that deal and neither will
Emery or Trestman. They're all-in, and all in this together
now.
I was a little surprised to hear all the happy talk in the
presser about building on good things, etc. Because the Bears
team I saw these last two games had no momentum of any kind and
in fact was pretty much in free fall with leadership badly
lacking both on the sidelines and on the field. The offense
showed improvement from the beginning of the year (Philly game
notwithstanding), but D and STs in December were worse than we
saw in September, and not just by a little bit.

that would work out to 18M per year with the first 3 years
guaranteed.
I'm sure there is more to it than that.

If I'm not mistaken, three years from now Trestman's contract
will be up and so will Emery's. So guaranteeing Cutler the first
3 years makes sense in that respect (although again, the cap
implications could be brutal). If the Bears have a great run
these next 3 years then great but if they bomb then all three of
them are out on their butts together and we start over from
scratch.
That's how smart teams do it, rather than the traditional Bears
way of leapfrogging GMs, HCs and QBs.
