4. It sounds like they blame the DL woes on injuries. I still
think they need a DT at #14, but with Melton and Collins coming
back, maybe they don't think so.
Makes projecting that pick tougher. If it isn't a DT/DE, and
Peanut is leaving, maybe they take Justin Gilbert here?
Melton was just tagged for this past season. Whether they can
convince him to come back is debateable. It sounded from what
Emery said that Melton has to focus on his rehab. That gave me
the impression that he hasn't to date. Thus re-signing him isn't
going necessarily going to happen. Now I don't know when Melton
had his surgery but it seems that in this amount of time he
should be in pretty good shape by now. But... something was said
somewhere that Melton wasn't doing so well. If that's the case
the Bears likely still look for a DT somewhere be it draft or
UFA. To me that issue is up in the air at this point in time

Wouldn't surprise me if Melton was a goner.
#1 does he fit the scheme going forward? Keep in mind that even
before his season ending injury he clearly was not the same
player he had been under Lovie.
#2 is he looking for realistic money as damaged goods? The
Bears got virtually zero return on the $8 mil they paid him
under the tag and would certainly not to be inclined to pay big
again on a long term deal.
#3, as previously said, how has he been approaching his rehab?
The bar fight down in Texas recently certainly didn't help his
stock I'm sure.
The Bears have pretty much all the leverage in this situation.
One of the Chicago media guys tweeted that when Melton came in
to clean out his locker a few days ago he didn't look or act
like a guy who planned on being back. Dallas or Tampa could be
landing spots if I had to guess. Tampa more likely now with the
Lovie and Marinelli connections.

That's what it was I heard, when he came in to clean out his
locker. Probably why Emery said what he said in his presser.
Yeah Dallas or Tampa looks more promising than Chicago for
Melton

Melton was a nice success story as far as development... on a
team that had far too few of them during the Angelo/Lovie era.
Unfortunately I think he was so married to Lovie and Marinelli
that he was never going to fully buy in to the new regime. And I
would say the same is true of Peppers. Some guys are more
adaptable than others and if he's one of them that wasn't then
he was probably going to be shipping out even if he had been
healthy this year.
For what Melton is likely looking for in extension money, we
could pay a 1st round draft pick and still have enough for a
couple of other solid DL either through FA or the draft.

I'm not as big into Pro Football Focus as a lot of guys (and
Emery) are... but I would be very curious to know how they
rated Conte and Major Wright for the season.
Conte in particular has to be deep in the negative... and
Wright seemed to turn in about 2 or 3 bad plays for every good
one as well.

The word is that these guys are going to be in Florida working
out with BMarsh this summer:
Cutler
Forte
Martellus Bennett
Alshon
Marquis Wilson
So that's our top 3 WRs, our starting TE, starting RB and
starting QB all putting in time on their own to fine tune the
offense. I would assume McCown will join that group as well
if/when he is re-signed. This is the kind of thing that Brees
and the Saints skill players have done for years and you can see
the results. As long as they don't run afoul of the league for
skirting OTA restrictions, that is really good news and should
pay some nice dividends next season.

Like I said, I think we need a DT at #14. Whether Melton is back
or no is irrelevant, IMO. You can't assume he'd be back 100%.
Tommie Harris redux.
My concern is that everything said seems to indicate they are
chalking up the line problems to injuries. Which would suggest
they might not think they need to spend a first round pick on
it.
If Peanut is leaving, we need a starting CB opposite Jennings.
Which is why I would wonder if we would take Gilbert, or maybe
even Dennard from Mich. State.
It isn't exactly a deep draft at CB.

My personal opinion... get strong up front first, then address
S. CB IMO does not warrant a Top 15 pick because it is not
enough of a need.
I am comfortable with Jennings, Bowman and Frey as our top 3 CBs
PROVIDED we have safeties that can play and a DL that can rush
the passer and keep run blockers off our LBs.
Hageman from U of Minnesota is the guy I target at 14, and in
fact is the guy going to us in the latest Walter Football mock
draft. 6'6 310, TE athleticism and an NBA vertical (to knock
down those Rodgers and Stafford passes). A Richard Seymour type
who could give us impact at either DT or Peppers RDE position.
If he turns in a great combine he may go Top 10 but for now I'm
thinking he'll be there at 14. We would also have to look very
seriously at the #1 S in the draft (judged by most to be
Clinton-Dix from Bama) if he were still there at our pick.

Emery could just be playing possum saying the DL was all
injuries. No need to tip our hand ahead of the draft.
