Excellent. Muy bueno. The overall offensive improvement takes
another step

wonder why Bennett wouldn't work with those guys in FL?
I'm not sure how much time they spend down there. I can see with
Bennett being older, maybe with a family that he wants to be at
home.
AJ and MW are younger guys that likely don't have those ties.

I think he was being WAY to generous with this comment:
Asked about high-priced defensive end Julius Peppers, Emery
said, "He's under contract. Julius had an 8-8 year like we all
did."

Are you talking Earl or Martellus?
Earl finished the season on a pretty big down note, with some
personal issues that kept him away. Earl is making a lot of
money for a #3 and Wilson is clearly the heir apparent at that
position so I suspect we have seen the last of him in a Bear
uniform.
Martellus, IIRC, worked with Marshall in Florida last offseason
and I haven't seen anything saying he wouldn't again.

A few things I'm taking from this:
1. We are not drafting a QB. You don't sign your QB to a 7 year
deal and then go draft his replacement. If McCown isn't
re-signed we will sign another veteran backup.
2. McLellin will be back. Judging from Trestman's comments,
they're going to give him another year at least. Said he was
capable of more and it was up to the coaches to get it out of
him. Frankly, that sounded like a small shot at Tucker.
3. Garza isn't long for this club. I expect the remake of the
line to be completed this year.
4. It sounds like they blame the DL woes on injuries. I still
think they need a DT at #14, but with Melton and Collins coming
back, maybe they don't think so.
Makes projecting that pick tougher. If it isn't a DT/DE, and
Peanut is leaving, maybe they take Justin Gilbert here?

Good to hear Cutler is signed, won't have that as a
distraction..
Yep, I'd look for peanut to head south..

Earl Bennet actually did pretty well catching the ball this
year, WHEN they threw it to him. He is clearly the #3 or #4
option now. But I dont seem to recall many drops, and he was
always good for fighting for extra yards. I think the reason he
was away from the team is because his brother or a family member
was injured or killed or something.

If Melton wants to head down to Lovie, good luck with that. I
dont see any way we dont desperately need help at DT and DE.
And lots of it.

Agreed on ISF's Points 1 and 2.
Regarding Garza, hard to say. He was mentioned a few times by
various people in the presser and is very highly regarded by the
other vets including Cutler. I personally feel he is at or very
near the end of his run but it would be a tough sell in the
locker room if Emery didn't at least make Garza an offer. Keep
in mind he played G before moving him to C so even if he isn't
in the plans as our starting C going forward, he may have value
for another year or two as an interior backup and mentor to the
young guys.
Re the DL, again hard to say. My personal opinion is that if we
don't get significantly bigger at DT, they are setting Tucker
(or whomever) up to fail as well as McClellin and our young LBs.
Melton and Collins are sub-300 lbs and even if we bring Ratliff
back at 305 that is still one of the smallest DT rotations in
the league. And Paea is just flat-out not good. If DT is a
targeted position for Emery in the draft, it would make sense
that he would be especially cagey at this point of the offseason
in disclosing his intentions. Anything other than a DT or S
with our first round pick would raise my eyebrows and would have
to be an exceptionally productive player from Day One.

I can see Garza getting maybe a 1 or 2 year contract knowing
that in effect it is only for 1 year. Unless the C Boggs really
lights it up.
