The UDFA DT from Montana was Zack Minter. He had a pretty
impressive college highlight reel and made the final cut after
training camp but I'm not sure he ever made a game day roster
and I think he was released sometime during the middle of the
season. I don't know if he picked up with anybody else.
A really athletic kid with a nice motor but yet another Bears DT
that was kind of on the small side. Depending on how Tucker
wants to switch things up he may not have fit into the plans
going forward anyway.

My problem with drafting a S over a DT in Round 1 is that safety
is a position you really don't want a rookie starting if you can
help it. There is so much to learn back there and such a high
potential cost for making mistakes that I would rather upgrade
our S corps with a guy who has played the position at a high
level for several years. No matter how talented Clinton-Dix or
some other safety might be, I think there's a real chance that
starting a rookie at S could cause our play at that position to
be even worse than it was last year. Our back 7 was completely
rudderless on the field last year and if we're not going to get
any on-field leadership from our LBs then the next most logical
QB of our D would be a safety.
DT on the other hand, no big deal to stick a rookie in there. As
long as he has big-time talent and you can pair him with a savvy
vet (Ratliff, hopefully), he can grow into the "head" part of
the game.
So I would rather spend the bulk of our FA money on a top
veteran safety, hedge our bets for the future with another S in
the 3rd or 4th round and save the top 2 picks (where you want
and expect to get Day 1 starters) for the DL where our lack of
size and strength was seriously exploited this year.

I expect nothing more than the same this year after our first
round selection is made.
It is always easier to say, "ehhh I was wrong it was a good
pick." Then to defend saying why you were in favor of a bust
pick.
