ESPN NFL draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. revealed his first mock
draft on Wednesday, with Chicago using its first-round pick to
select Florida State’s Timmy Jernigan at No. 14.
The move would certainly make sense if Jernigan, widely regarded
as the draft’s best defensive tackle, is still available because
he fits Chicago’s scheme. But the question for Bears general
manager Phil Emery might be whether Jernigan “transcends scheme”
as he so often likes to say.
A junior, Jernigan led Florida State with 11 tackles for lost
yardage last season and is considered one of the draft’s premier
run stuffers. Kiper ranks Jernigan at No. 10 on his Big Board,
while Todd McShay of Scouts Inc. lists him as No. 7 in his top
32.
McShay wrote this about Jernigan:
Jernigan performed well in the Seminoles' BCS title game victory
over Auburn, recording nine tackles, although he appeared gassed
at times in the fourth quarter and had to come out of the game
for a stretch. He is a classic 3-technique with good first-step
quickness and good range versus the run, and is a very
disruptive player.
Kiper, meanwhile, is enamored with “his great sense for how to
disrupt the run game in particular. He could be quicker off the
snap -- maybe it's just anticipation -- but he makes up for it
and can both drive blocks and split doubles. Once he's in
motion, he has good burst, power and improved hand use to free
himself. He's a former defensive end who brings a lot of
quickness to the inside. He moves easily and can occasionally
shoot gaps or move laterally and scrape with pace to get down
the line.”
If the Bears selected Jernigan at No. 14, they certainly
wouldn’t be disappointed.

I'm not on board with Jernigan at all. He reminds me too much of
Tommie and Melton, I.e. one lower body injury and they're done.
Much rather would have Nix or Hageman who have enough bulk and
strength to overcome loss of quickness over time. Plus nobody
knows what Tucker's new scheme will be. Jernigan would be great
for Lovie in Tampa but for what Tucker wants to do he might not
be a fit at all.
Emery is already under the microscope for the McClellan pick. If
he goes 1st round DL again he has got to get this one right.

No shiit ... we need what it takes in the off season to correct
it.
Hey if anybody has any BRAINS at Halas Hall ... lets cut to the
fuuckin chase.
We know the DEFENSE GAVE UP / AND OR/ fuucking flat out QUIT.
Well ... Tuckers back ...and hes been given a clean slate.
So fuuck last season ... lets see how this FA and draft works
out.
But its Mels last time at the helm.

Yeah but how do we pick up what you want ?
Trade up?
We can't afford to trade up this year... too many holes to
fill.
If Hageman is there at 14, it's a no-brainer. If he's gone
(possible with a good combine), then we either take Nix, or if
he's gone too we trade down a few spots to get the next best DT
at value, OR if the best S is there at 14 we go that route.
That's how I see it anyway.
DE I suppose is another option but the only guy who seems to
warrant a Top 15 pick is possibly Kony Ealy and he's not much
bigger than McClellin so I'm not sure about him. Tuitt from
Notre Dame would be another option... especially if we shift
toward a 3-4 which he seems better suited for anyway.

I would like to see Emery pick Hageman and throw everyone a
curve ball, just like he did with McClellin. Only with better
results this time. ;)

I'm afraid that Hageman will not be a secret to NFL GMs by the
time May rolls around. I can see him killing it at the combine
and being the top DT drafted... possibly Top 12.

Emery has traded up before. He traded up in the 2nd round for
Jeffery. But to trade up in the 1st round takes a lot of points
and we cant afford to do so with so many holes to fill and a
small amount of cap to work with. Its so foolish to even begin
to think of trading up in the 1st round. Its easier to consider
trading down and picking up additional picks to fill a myriad of
needs
