You can always trade pitching for damn near whatever you want.

I want personal opinions from each scouting report. This
particular scout says Turner has an awkward swing and will never
be more than a singles hitter. That opinion may be wrong, but I
don't get the feeling it's unique to him. There seem to be some
other scouts who don't have Turner real high, on basis of his
bat. I hope they are wrong. But better to hear those opinions
now.

And if a true big time pitching prospect (by which I assume you
mean someone who has strong ace potential, such as Prior did)
who is close to being major league ready is still available when
the Cubs pick, I am certain everyone here and in the Cub front
office will agree with you and that the Cubs will take that
pitching prospect.
But that is extremely unlikely to happen.

Just as you can with a top SS prospect... or with a quality
established SS who then gets replaced by a top SS prospect.
Jim Fregosi, who just died 10 days ago, was traded by the Angels
in 1971 at age 30, after 6 All Star seasons at SS and when he
was still regarded as one of the best in the game, for four Met
prospects, including one of the best young arms in the game --
Nolan Ryan.

Normally, you would be right. But this year seems to unusually
strong in college pitchers with # 1 potential.
Things are certain to change in one direction or another, but at
this point there are two (Rodon and Hoffman) that are veiwed by
many as being in that category, and one (Beede) that seems to be
heading in that direction. If that doesn't change, all it would
require would be for one of the three top teams to decide, as
the Cubs did last year, that they want the top offensive player,
and the Cubs have their chance.
I believe that if the draft were held today, the Cubs might well
end up with a near MLB ready potential ace.

"Clearly personal bias at work?" Where do you get that from?
The guy can't have a different point of view absent clear
personal bias?

And if a near MLB ready potential ace, a Prior quality prospect,
is available, each club with the opportunity to draft him will
likely do so. The chances of four of them existing on draft day
is remote at best. If the pitching prospect is not of that
caliber, but is instead of the caliber which has historically
been taken at #4, I suspect the Cubs, and most of us, would be
quite happy to draft Turner, if on draft day he still looks like
we expect him to look.
Since the first MLB draft in 1965, only the following pitchers
taken at #4 have ended up winning more than 100 career games in
the majors: Jon Matlack, Mike Morgan, and Alex Fernandez. There
have been at least two other once very highly regarded pitchers
taken at #4 who never quite reached their promise: Kerry Wood
and Mike Harkey. The #4 slot has done a bit better with
position players: Thurman Munson, Darrell Porter, Dave Winfield,
Barry Larkin and Ryan Zimmerman. All of those position players
(except Zimmerman, who is still playing) had a career WAR higher
than any of the pitchers taken at #4.
Is it possible another Kerry Wood or Kevin Brown will still be
available at # 4 this year? Sure. Not at all likely, but
possible.

Well it was March 9 last year before Kris Bryant started
approaching the radar for our pick. Pretty much, these rankings
aren't worth much more than a warm bucket of spit at this point.
