I've heard top 5-6, I'm not sure he ever dropped out of top 10
consideration.

Mooney's recent list of a dozen players the Cubs were
considering didn't include Gatewood.

Listening to Kiley McDaniel's podcast of 4-1 on scoutbaseball
and he called Gatewood (after the NHSI games) a "fringe 1st
rounder." Also, Law's top 40 from 3-21 has Gatewood at #19
overall. McDaniel said Gatewood looked a bit better in one of
the NHSI games but still has not made changes in his swing that
scouts want to see and whether he goes in the first round may
depend on how strongly a club's area scout pushes for him.
Doesn't seem like a top 5 guy from these sources at least.

Here is a link to the top 30 composite prospects for Law, BA and
Chance Crawford from early March 2013. Let's just say that
rankings at this point don't mean much. Gatewood might have
fallen more than what I thought though.

College teams start games around mid-February. At this point
right now, we are about halfway through the season, with most
schools ending mid-May.
I think that by early April a year ago, Gray and Bryant had
moved up some based on their strong starts to the season. That
link shows that. Gray and Bryant moved up by mid-March,
compared to the BA rankings in February. So, I wouldn't say that
they don't mean much but that they are snapshot in time and
probably will change for some guys. True enough.
I suppose Cubs were likely going to take a pitcher in any case
but what interests me most right now are the reports that there
doesn't seem to be a strong position player candidate for #4 at
the moment. Maybe that will change and Cubs will be in position
to take the top position player in the draft, like last season.
It would be nice if that was at least an option.
Of course, it's one thing to have assessments of the what the
industry may believe and another thing as to what individual
clubs may be thinking about particular players, especially with
signability issues. My understanding is that there is often a
very big difference between one club's #1-30 list and another
club's #1-30 list, not to mention the players after round one.
Not an exact science.

I don't think the Cubs will take him, but if he can show power
and an improved hit tool he might interest somebody like the
Marlins or White Sox. What I find interesting about this draft
is that Rodon has long been consider a lock for 1.1 and now he's
falling and throwing the whole draft up in the air.
Last year I locked into a Manaea then Grey then Appel, so I'm
trying to broden it out this year. I really like Aiken. The
rest of the pitchers come with a whole bunch of questions.
Rodon where did the fastball and slider go, is the back an
issue, are his mechanics a mess? Hoffman great stuff with so/so
results. Beede great stuff with questionable command. Kolek
has just never done it for me, so that means he's probably the
pick. College hitters are a mess with Turner's bat bombing and
the loss speed. Zimmer is interesting, but interesting enough
for #4, I'm not so sure. High school bats aren't impressing a
whole lot either.
I'll start looking at the draft boards when the draft is about a
month away, just in the last month there has been some huge
movement and I'd expect that to continue.

Guessing that the guy most likely to be gone by #4 is Kolek.
So, if you're not sold on him, you might not have to worry.
Watched some video of Aiken and he is awfully polished for a HS
guy. Hard not to like him.
Hoffman has the classic pitchers body. He's like the extremely
tall guy you see on the street and want to ask if he plays
basketball. Hoffman just looks like a pitcher.
With Rodon, I worry a tiny bit that this could be Bobby Brownlie
all over again. Brownlie went into the season as the likely #1
overall pick, got hurt and his stock went down, and Cubs took a
flier late in first round mostly based on his pre-season
pedigree. We all know what happened with that. I think you
mostly have to throw out what you saw a year ago and assess the
guy as he looks now.
Kind of like Hayden Simpson..... No.

And he has a good face. Harkening back to the Dollar Sign on
the Muscle days of evaluation, eh? ;)

BA has new top 50 up today.
Consistent with what Law has been saying lately, Aiken and Kolek
#1 and #2.
Rodon #3.
Contrary to Scout.com, Alex Jackson holding steady at #4. Could
Jackson be option for Cubs as top position player on the board?
Hoffman and Beede at 5 and 6.
Nola moving up to #7.
Zimmer and Turner at 10 and 11.
Gatewood at 16 .
