From ESPN draft guy Chris Crawford blog today:
It was also an interesting weekend for NC State shortstop Trea
Turner, a player who might be the most controversial player in
the entire 2014 class at this point. Turner went just 3-for-17
over the three game series, but two of those hits were
extra-base hits, including his first homer of the 2014 campaign.
He's now seen his line drop to .316/.386/.362, and while his
bat-to-barrel skills (just four strikeouts this year) and speed
are among the best in the class, the lack of offensive upside
concerns more than one club.
"I've heard people say [Turner] is a top-five lock, and I just
don't get it," an AL crosschecker said. "That's not to say that
I don't like him as a player, I think he's going to be a starter
at the big-league level and he's certainly a first-rounder. I
just don't see how you take him over a guy like Alex Jackson or
Jacob Gatewood or any of the big pitchers.
He's going to have to get on-base an awful lot to provide
offensive value, because his swing mechanics just give him no
chance for hitting for power. It's a nice skill-set, but I don't
see a top-five player."

A prep right-hander has never been selected with the No. 1 pick
in the current version of the MLB Draft, as teams have generally
shied away from the volatility of high-school pitchers early on.
And while it's still too early to say who the Houston Astros
will and won't consider with that first pick, it's hard to
imagine that Shepherd (Texas) HS right-hander Tyler Kolek won't
be considered if he continues to pitch like he did on Friday.
Kolek continued his domination on Friday, pitching a no-hitter
and coming within one hitter of a perfect game before a walk
with two outs in the sixth ended his run. While the stats are
impressive, the stuff has been more so, as Kolek's fastball was
clocked at more than 100 mph on more than one occasion and he
showed two above-average breaking balls as well.
"I would absolutely consider him [at No. 1 overall]," an AL East
area scout said. "I know that there's some concerns about taking
a prep pitcher that high, but it's not like there haven't been
high school arms taken that high that haven't done very well.
Look at Josh Beckett [No. 2 overall in 1999], and I would be
very surprised if Jameson Taillon [No. 2 pick in 2010] isn't a
No. 2 starter. It's only a matter of time until a team pops a
high-school right-hander at that pick.
"Really though it's going to depend on how things go with the
other arms in the class. If [Carlos] Rodon is pitching in April
and May the way he was pitching last year, I can't see him not
being the guy. But if he's just okay and Kolek is still doing
this? I sure would consider it anyway."
Most teams that I've talked to believe that Kolek has clearly
passed Jeff Hoffman as the second best pitcher in this year's
class, and it's tough to see him not going in the top five, be
it to the Astros, Miami Marlins, Chicago White Sox, Chicago Cubs
or Minnesota Twins.

So if Kolek continues to no-hit every team he faces and never
walks more than one hitter, he might be considered with the
first pick.... well, DUH!

They are if one team has a 10 run lead. It triggers the "mercy
rule."

Kolek is 6-5, 230, and in 15 innings so far this season he has
not allowed a hit.
Check the video. The guy's thigh's look like they belong on an

Shepherd (Texas) might be only 4-9 on the season, but its games
have probably drawn more scouts than any baseball program in the
country. That's because when Tyler Kolek takes the mound for the
Pirates, amazing things happen.
So far in 2014, the 6-foot-5, 230-pound right-handed pitcher has
yet to give up a hit in 15 innings pitched. He picked up his
first no-hitter of the season Friday in a 10-0 win over Liberty
in district play. Kolek (2-0) struck out 11 batters in five
innings, did not walk a batter and hit one in posting his second
win of the season.
The outing marked the third time this year that Kolek has thrown
five innings in a game and not allowed a hit. In his first
outing of the season, a 3-0 win over Lumberton, Kolek pitched
five innings and struck out 11 with one walk. He did not finish
the game, however, giving way to brother Stephen Kolek, who
pitched the final two innings.
In his second start, Tyler Kolek went five innings against
Tarkington and did not allow a hit while striking out 13 in five
innings of work. However Tarkington scored two runs in the sixth
against a Shepherd relief pitcher and gained the 2-0 win.
Tyler has struck out 35 batters in 15 innings with one walk and
six hit batsmen. He has regularly pitched in front of
approximately 30 scouts, which might be expected from a pitcher
who hit 100 mph in June at a summer showcase.

Kolek's delivery looked pretty smooth and he looked athletic for
a giant person. He and Vogelbach would be very popular in
Chicago.
What's the average fastball those high school hitters face the
rest of the time, 78? Now they are seeing upper 90s? I commend
them for even standing in there against him (especially since
he's already plunked 6 guys this year).

Wow. There may not be too many more opportunities to see how
Kolek does.
His HS team only has 4 more games scheduled, and since his team
is 4-9 for the season, I wouldn't expect them to go very far any
any post-season tournaments.
The team played tonight, but since he pitched Friday he would
not have been pitching, and then has 4 more games:

It is possible he could start 3 of those four games, since 3 of
them would give him more than 6 days rest between starts, and
since his team would appear to be pretty bad other than him, it
would not be surprising for him to get 3 of the 4 starts. I am
now about 3 hours away from where two of those Friday games will
be played, meaning I could probably make it by just about
starting time.... now all I have to do is persuade the wife that
what she really wants to do on a Tuesday night is to drive 3
hours to watch a HS baseball game in the hope we will be seeing
the next Lance Dickson... and then to be willing myself to get
up for work the next day with less than 5 hours of sleep.
Piece of cake.

Physically he reminds me of Tom Seaver on the mound.
