Rodon at #4 would make me giddy. If the Cubs were going to go a
HS pitcher, Brady Aiken would be interesting. Hard throwing LHP
out of San Diego. Gatewood I guess is impressing as well. He'd
be another RH power bat to add to the stable.

self-described "MLB draft junkie" Dan Kirby tweeted this
"@DanMKirby - Tyler Kolek with a no hitter yesterday. Now has
35 K/ 1 BB over 16 no hit innings. And he hit 102 mph."
Don't see the Cubs taking him if he's available, but not too
hard to imagine Marlins or Whitesox taking him. Read somewhere
that no h.s. right handed pitcher has never gone #1 overall, but
I suppose it's possible Houston would take a Texan to partner
with fellow Texan Appel.
Obviously if he's drafted top 3 it would assure the Cubs of at
least having the option with whichever of the three top college
arms is still available.

Cubs can BPA anybody. Kolek might be in that pool, who knows.
I heard that Turner got both a double and a HR yesterday, so
he's gotten a non-ground-ball extra-base-hit for sure now this
season, maybe two!

Maybe it was a real hard ground ball that rolled all the way to
the wall and he turned it into an inside the park HR with his
speed.

In 1982, when the Cubs picked Dunston with the 1st pick in the
first round, a good HS arm probably would have been the better
choice -- Dwight Gooden. Gooden was actually the 3rd pitcher
taken that season, and the 2nd HS pitcher when the Mets took him
at #5. The other two pitchers, Jimmy Jones and Brian Oelkers,
both made the majors, but both also ended up with negative
career WAR numbers.
Looking back at the records to check on that was one more
depressing reminder of how bad the Cubs have done with their
draft picks -- from 2002 to 2005, not one of the 6 first round
picks the Cubs had ever reached the majors. And with four first
round picks from 1982 to 1983, only Dunston reached. And much
as many of us might love Dunston, of the 26 overall #1 draft
picks from 1976 thru 2001, Dunston ranked 6th in total WAR, and
3 of the 5 who ranked behind him were pitchers, and each of them
suffered arm injuries that seriously limited their careers.

I loved Dunston as a player, but there is no doubt that he never
came close to living up to his tools. Probably partly because
of his personality, but I believe mostly because of the Cubs
development system during the last 50 years.

When you have a poor player development system, you have to
draft that super rare talent that doesn't need much input (and
is strong enough to ignore detrimental input) in order to be
successful. When your player development system is strong, a
youngster with marginal talent can sometimes be developed into a
useful MLer.
I'm hopeful that the current player development system is
strong, and that it is synergizing with solid drafting in a way
that will soon produce a stream of first rate MLers. Things
look good, but obviously the jury is still out.
