At this point, I have no idea what you do about Castro. He's
just a mess. All I can think of is flipping him with Barney,
having Castro learn a new position, and hope in a few years
someone comes along and bumps Barney (Alcantara...whomever).
You would think someone with 200 hits as a 21 year old would not
have an obp of about .280 several seasons later.

So whats the early verdict on the Rizzo for Cashner trade? At
this point, though I understood the move, I'm still not a fan.
Less specific (followed by specifics), the Theo era has sucked
       so far:
       1. failed to move Garza when other starting pitchers were being
dealt (at this point, the best value is probably to extend his
       contract)
       2. castro has regressed to unbearable levels
       3. rizzo for cashner at this point looks, at best, a draw, but
right now Rizzo is struggling and Cash is not
       4. concepcion signing was 6 million wasted
       5. Solar over Puig (nevermind Puig's ridiculous start, Soler
went after another human being with a baseball bat. That is dsm
       5 material)
       6. 100+ loss season
       7. maybe another 100+ loss season
       8. early returns on the edwin jackson signing (5+ era. theo's
first big free agent investment w/ the cubs) are disturbing.
Thus far, it seems this group is getting a benefit of the doubt
that I think others would not. I'm trying to figure out why,
b/c Epstein is in no way the sole reason Boston did well (for
example, how are they doing today?). A further example, they
were lucky in being able to dump some of Theo's free agent
       mistakes onto L.A..
This team is such a mess. Originally, I thought it was fixable
by 2015. Now, no way does that happen. If they dealt Garza
last year, I would have been more optimistic. Now, I see 2016
as the best chance of not being embarrassed.

       Not good news here.

David DeJesus - OF - Cubs
Cubs manager Dale Sveum said Wednesday that he expects David
DeJesus (shoulder) to miss about a month.
DeJesus on Monday was diagnosed with a right shoulder strain, an
injury he suffered when he slammed into the center field fence
last Friday. The Cubs will use Ryan Sweeney as their primary
center fielder while DeJesus is out.

Look at the bright side -- an early draft pick in 2014, and a
team so bad after this season it would be foolish to try to make
major moves for serious improvement in 2014 (since those would
almost have to be short term moves with long term costs) meaning
another high level draft pick in 2015.
Of greater concern is the fact that Sveum not only seems unable
to develop Castro, we are seeing real regression from both
Castro and Rizzo, and those are guys the Cubs truly need to
produce at high levels in the future for the team to amount to
anything... and it is not looking good for that.

Nobody on the Cubs seems to be taking up for Castro on the Shane
       Robinson slide.

Nobody in clubhouse thinks Robinson's slide on Tues game-ender
was dirty. Sveum: "I hope my players would do the same thing."

The slide was very obviously illegal. Don't know if it was
dirty or not...but it was definitely the right call by the
       umpire.

Cashner for Rizzo looks like a no doubt grand slam for the Cubs
up until now... No idea how you construe it any other way.
Bitterman, you're living up to your name.

In fairness to the Padres, though, Cashner is pitching pretty
       well this year.

I doubt either side is too disappointed with how the trade has
       worked out so far.

I'd make that trade over again 1000 times.
And we wont lose much with Sweeney in CF.
He's been one of the bright spots of the season.

Since it was a trade between teams at the bottom of the league,
short-term returns are pretty much meaningless. I think you'd
have to call it pretty close to a wash at this point - Rizzo has
been up and down, and Cashner often hurt - but he's pitching
very well for them this year. I think he clearly has the bigger
       upside and the bigger risk.
