Magnetite in the human body: Biogenic vs. anthropogenic
Magnetite is an iron-oxide mineral that occurs naturally on
Earth. Because it is also an important component of many
anthropogenic materials (e.g., coal fly ash) and synthetic
products (e.g., black toner powders), magnetite can be released
to the environment through human activities (1). In PNAS, Maher
et al. (2) describe the abundant presence in the human brain of
magnetite nanoparticles, some of which they attribute to air
pollution. This finding could have major implications.
Magnetite belongs to the spinel group. It crystallizes in the
cubic crystal system (Fig. 1) and can be described by the
general formula Fe2+Fe3+2O4 (3). Magnetite is a common natural
phase, occurring in various geological environments, ranging
from igneous (e.g., layered ultrabasic rocks, basalts) to
sedimentary (e.g., banded iron formations, beach sands) rocks,
and to high-grade metamorphic rocks (e.g., schists, skarns),
where it can be produced through a multitude of chemical
reactions. Due to its tendency to react with oxygen to form
hematite (Fe2O3) and various iron oxyhydroxides (e.g.,
ferrihydrite, goethite), magnetite can be used as a powerful
tool to explore oxygen concentrations in rocks during geological
processes, changes in the oxygen content of the atmosphere
(e.g., early Earth), and redox conditions in near-surface
environments (e.g., oxic-anoxic transition zone). Because
magnetite is ferrimagnetic, it represents a phase that is
essential for paleomagnetic investigations, which help in
reconstructing plate tectonics through Earth’s history.
Biogenic, chemically pure magnetite crystals occur in the bodies
of a wide range of organisms within the kingdoms of the Monera,
Protista, and Animalia (e.g., magnetotactic microbes, insects,
molluscs, fish, birds, mammals) (4). In these organisms,
magnetite forms the basis for one type of biophysical mechanism
of magnetic field detection, which facilitates orientation and
navigation (5, 6). In the human brain, magnetite is also
believed to precipitate biologically as part of the iron
metabolism (7), but now, in PNAS, Maher et al. (2) suggest that
it can originate from an external source.
Air pollution comprises not only gases (e.g., nitrogen oxides,
ozone, sulfur dioxide) but also solid particles, which range in
size from a few nanometers to several micrometers. These
particles, known as particulate matter (PM), are generated
through both natural processes and human activity, and are
emitted directly into, or formed within, the atmosphere. As a
result of atmospheric circulation, the airborne particles in a
given environment can be derived from both local and distant
sources, such as dry lakes, deserts, fires, smoke stacks,
traffic, or mining operations. Magnetite is an abundant
constituent of atmospheric PM pollution, especially in the urban
environment (8), where it has been identified in diesel exhaust,
as brake-abrasion particles, in the air of underground stations,
along railway lines, at welding workplaces, and in the emissions
from industrial combustion processes.
In addition to having major atmospheric, environmental, and
ecological impacts (8), airborne PM may have adverse health
effects, both acute and chronic, because with each breath,
millions of solid particles, including magnetite, can enter our
respiratory system. Once inhaled, coarse particles (generally
defined as particles with a diameter >2.5 μm) may be
deposited on the surfaces of the conducting airways of the upper
respiratory system, whereas smaller particles (<2.5 μm
across, PM2.5) can migrate to the deepest parts of the lung
where the gas exchange takes place (9). Ultrafine particles
(<100 nm), or nanoparticles, may penetrate through the cell
tissue that lines the respiratory tract and translocate into the
blood circulation and into extrapulmonary organs, but also, via
the olfactory nerve, into the central nervous system (10). In
PNAS, Maher et al. (2) invoke this latter mechanism for the
transfer of air pollution-derived magnetite nanoparticles to the
brains of the studied individuals. These authors use the mostly
spherical shapes of the magnetite as one of the main arguments
for their hypothesis: Spherical shapes are typical of
combustion-derived particles (e.g., in diesel exhaust) in
contrast to abrasion-derived particles (e.g., brake-wear
particles), which are typically irregularly shaped and angular,
or to endogenous particles, which tend to be euhedral because
they grew in situ (e.g., within the brain) (7). The electron
microscope images presented by Maher et al. (2) document that
two types of magnetite, spherical and euhedral, are present in
the studied brains, suggesting that they were derived from two
different sources, one external (from air pollution) and one
internal (i.e., biogenic). This conclusion is further supported
by the presence of other transition-metal nanoparticles, which
are common in airborne PM from polluted areas.
One of the questions that arises from the discovery of
externally derived magnetite in brain tissue is whether or not
the abundant additional magnetite adversely affects human
health. It is well known from epidemiological and toxicological
studies that exposure to PM2.5 is linked to increases in
mortality and hospital admissions due to respiratory and
cardiovascular diseases (11). There is increasing evidence that
coarser particles may also produce deleterious health effects
(12). In addition to being dependent on size, however, the
interactions are influenced by other particle characteristics,
including structure, chemical composition, shape, surface area
and reactivity, sorptive properties, and solubility. The adverse
health effects include chronic bronchitis, exacerbation of
asthma, fibrosis, and lung cancer (13). The mechanisms behind
these diseases, as well as their dependence on particle
properties, are still poorly known. The most likely mechanisms
involve the excessive production of free radicals [e.g.,
reactive oxygen species (ROS)], which can lead to oxidative
damage to cell membranes, proteins, and DNA, as well as to the
release of chemical substances that trigger and perpetuate
inflammation (14, 15).
In regard to the human health effects of magnetite, published
data exist for both the brain and the respiratory system. For
example, the presence in the brain of magnetite may be linked to
several neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s
disease, and oxidative stress appears to play a key role in the
pathogenesis (16, 17). In vitro experiments with human lung
cells, which were exposed for 24 h to different magnetite size
fractions (including nanoparticles) and doses, revealed that the
studied particles, although being only slightly cytotoxic, led
to increased ROS formation, mitochondrial damage, and genotoxic
effects (18). The results allowed for the conclusion that ROS
formation plays an important role in the genotoxicity of
magnetite in lung cells. On the other hand, magnetite
nanoparticles might be considerably less toxic when
surface-modified (i.e., coated) (19).
The presence of magnetite in humans, however, also has other
potential implications, including possible biological disorders
linked to the weak magnetic fields generated by cellular phones,
electric power lines, and appliances, or high-field saturation
effects from exposure to strong magnetic fields during MRI
procedures (7). At the same time, nanoparticles of magnetite are
of special interest in the biomedical sciences, because they can
be used as carriers for targeted drug delivery (20). Moreover,
magnetite nanoparticles can be exploited for hyperthermia-based
cancer therapy, where the heat induced by application of an
alternating magnetic field causes necrosis of cancer cells but
does not damage the surrounding normal tissue (21). Various
researchers have further proposed that endogenous magnetite
might play a key role in perception, transduction, and long-term
storage of information in the human brain and in other organisms
(22).
The occurrence of magnetite in cell tissues therefore represents
an intriguing dichotomy: On the one hand, the mineral can play a
key role in magnetoreception and navigation, and thus survival,
of various types of organisms, and on the other hand, it can
impart deleterious effects in humans, especially when they are
exposed to high PM concentrations in polluted urban
environments.

I'd never heard of helenite but I do have obsidian. Interesting
Helenite, also known as Mount St. Helens obsidian, emerald
obsidianite, and ruby obsidianite, is an artificial glass made
from the fused volcanic rock dust from Mount St. Helens and
marketed as a gemstone.[1][2] Helenite was first created
accidentally after the eruption of Mount St. Helens in 1980.
Workers from the Weyerhaeuser Timber Company were attempting to
salvage equipment damaged after the volcanic eruption. Using
acetylene torches, they noticed that the intense heat was
melting the nearby volcanic ash and rock and turning it a
greenish color. The silica, aluminium, iron, and trace amounts
of chromium and copper present in the rocks and ash in the area,
combined with the heat of the torches, transformed the volcanic
particles into a compound that would be later commercially
replicated as helenite.[3]
As word of the discovery spread, jewelry companies took note and
began to find ways to reproduce the helenite. Helenite is made
by heating rock dust and particles from the Mount St. Helens
area in a furnace to a temperature of approximately 2,700 °F
(1,480 °C). Although helenite and obsidian are both forms of
glass, helenite differs from obsidian in that it is man-made.
The stone has been marketed by the jewelry industry because of
its emerald-like color, good refractive index, and
durability.[3] It is seen as an inexpensive alternative to
naturally-occurring green gemstones, such as emerald and
peridot. Helenite can also come in various red, green and blue
varieties.[3]

Today's rock will be Iolite!!
One of my very very favorites.
While looking for I fo to post today, I discovered something
about Iolite I never knew.
It was used by the Vikings to navigate their boats!!!
All this time, that special rock you see them use on the series
Vikings, has been an Iolite!!
That's amazing to me..
:yeah3:
So let's begin
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Like a crisp, dark winter sky, Iolite, in shifting shades of
violet-blue carries the spirit of journey, of dreams and
intuition, of exploration and illumination. It is known as the
Vikings' Compass, and provides the vision to move us, physically
and spiritually, from one realm to the next.
Leif Eriksson and other Viking explorers who ventured far out
into the Atlantic Ocean, away from any coastline that would help
determine position, used thin pieces of Iolite as the world's
first polarizing filter. Looking through an Iolite lens, they
could determine the exact location of the sun and navigate
safely to the New World and back.
A property called pleochroism is very pronounced in Iolite,
producing different colors when the stone is seen through
different positions. Overall, Iolite appears as violet-blue or
indigo, but in different positions may shift to a yellow-gray or
honey color, and even to a clear light blue. It is also referred
to as "Water Sapphire" or Dichroite. Iolite's name comes from
the Greek ios, meaning violet, and is the gem version of the
mineral Cordierite.
Iolite helps in recovering balance, and is recommended for those
suffering from disorientation, lack of motivation, chronic
disorganization, and distraction.
It strengthens the resolve to take on responsibility and carry
through, and provides self-assurance and endurance in adverse
situations. It is an excellent source of energy when used for
the elimination of debt and the responsible management of money.
Iolite restores a sense of perspective to those who feel they
are jinxed, and inspires anyone with a chaotic life to start to
bring order in small practical ways.
Iolite resonates with the energy of twilight, a beautiful
violet-blue that stimulates the astral bodies and psychic
awareness. It reveals realms beyond the usual waking
consciousness and is ideal for astral projection, dimensional
and other inner vision works, and is excellent for past- and
alternate-life work.
Iolite is a stone of the muses, activating the visionary,
creative side of the mind, and accessing thoughts and ideas
beyond the ordinary. It inspires creative self-expression
through writing, song, movement and other artistic endeavors.
Use Iolite to strengthen family dilemmas. Place in the living
area if sibling rivalry or the presence of a new step-parent is
causing a child to feel excluded. Use Iolite if family members
have over-high expectations of you, or if your career path was
chosen for you because of family connections. As an amulet,
Iolite brings travelers safely home. Give a piece of Iolite
jewelry or a tumblestone as a farewell gift to students leaving
home or emigrating family members.
Iolite aids in understanding and releasing the causes of
addiction, allowing for the expression of one's true self, freed
from the expectations of others.
Iolite is a Dispeller Energizer Crystal. Sometimes in your life
you need to rid yourself of things you have but no longer want.
You want to get rid of pains, sickness, worry, and a host of
unpleasant feelings. For these needs, the Dispeller talismans
that form in the orthorhombic system are needed.
The Dispellers are also known as the Restorers. These crystals
are used to put things back right again after they are out of
balance. If you were happy, then became plagued by doubt, these
crystals help you to focus and magnify your energy to rid
yourself of the doubt and restore your happiness.
Combining that energy with their earth power as Energizers makes
Iolites perfect crystals for focusing and amplifying the
Universal Life Force and your energy to accomplish your quests.
Everyone gets tired and discouraged from time to time. Iolites
are a good antidote to allow you to keep your energy level up
and your efforts focused.
Iolite helps to provide solutions to seemingly insurmountable
problems. It promotes a calm, positive state of mind, instills
hope, and assists in decisions on how to proceed. It gives the
emotional distance needed for a clearer perspective.
Iolite is often used by those embarking on a shamanic journey.
It is also a powerful aid to helping you remove unwanted parts
of your life and restoring balance and happiness. It is a stone
of virtue and excellent for keeping your energy levels high.
Iolite Physical Healing Energy
Iolite is credited with supporting a stronger than normal
constitution and is said to enable one to consume alcohol
without exhibiting the effects, promotes detoxification, and
improves degenerated conditions of the liver. It also reduces
fatty deposits in the body.
Iolite is used in regulating digestion, and enhances hair and
nail growth.
Iolite strengthens the nerves, helps with paralysis and numb
limbs, and tolerating pain. [Gienger, 32] It has been used to
treat malaria and other fever-producing disorders.
Iolite may assist in healing of the eyes, migraines and
headaches, disorientation and dizziness, and Meniere's disease.
It also stimulates memory, and prevents insomnia, nightmares or
sleep disturbances.
Iolite Emotional Healing Energy
Iolite examines the inner path of the deep self. It assists in
letting go of the belief that one needs to control inner
experiences, and dissolves fear of the unknown or suppressed
parts of the psyche. It increases the capacity to move forward,
and allows for the understanding that the examination of one's
wounds is the most direct path to healing. It is a stone of
inner treasure, helping to uncover the lost parts of oneself,
and in receiving the peace one's spiritual journey brings.
When in the midst of adversity, Iolite helps to provide
solutions to seemingly insurmountable problems. It promotes a
calm, positive state of mind, instills hope, and assists in
decisions on how to proceed. It gives the emotional distance
needed for a clearer perspective.
Iolite balances the male/female aspects of one's character and
brings harmony within the self. By taking responsibility for
one's own life and happiness, it releases discord from
relationships and helps overcome codependency within close
partnerships.
Iolite Chakra Healing and Balancing Energy
Iolite carries a violet-blue energy that activates and clears
the Third Eye, opening communication and awareness from higher
vibratory realms.
The Brow Chakra, also called the Third Eye, is the center of our
perception and command. It directs our sight and everyday
awareness of the world. Our consciousness is located here, and
we relate to ourselves through this chakra.
It balances the important and the unimportant, sorting meaning
from data and impressions. It commands the energy flow within
the body. When the brow chakra is in balance we see clearly and
understand what we see. We can interpret visual cues and our
perception is high. Our thoughts and internal communications
within ourselves are healthy and vibrant. We are open to new
ideas, dreams, and visions. We can be quietly observant, and
reflective. We can control the flow of energy within all the
chakras. The dark blue/purple crystals of indigo are used to
treat imbalances of the brow chakra. This is the color of an
empty sky, of solitude and reflection. It is a quiet color, one
of mystery and wisdom and judgment.
Iolite may also link with, or stimulate, the Crown Chakra,
located at the top of the head. It is our gateway to the
expanded universe beyond our bodies, and controls how we think
and how we respond to the world around us. It is the
fountainhead of our beliefs and the source of our spirituality.
Iolite Spiritual Energy
Iolite is an excellent crystal for shamanic journeying,
increasing the vividness and detail of inner visions, and
bringing forward the symbols locked within the psyche that would
illuminate the issues one must face for continued growth. It
strengthens the resonant link between the mind and the heart.
In shamanic healing ceremonies, Iolite has been used to
influence the spirits. The Iolite ring of the shaman is worn to
insure accuracy within the vision, and to provide powerful
medicinal benefits.
Wearing Iolite helps awakens and sustains one's psychic gifts,
making it the perfect stone for astrologers, tarot readers,
mediums and other intuitives. It is highly beneficial for those
attempting to access information from past lives, especially
those associated with the Cathars, the Knights Templar and the
Arthurian legends.
As the "violet stone," Iolite is one of the major crystals used
in the Third Eye/Crown areas during healing, guided meditations,
and during astral travel. Its positioning produces different
outcomes and success levels, and should be determined using
one's intuition capabilities. Iolite produces an electrical
charge when in contact with one's auric field, and both
strengthens and aligns with the subtle bodies.
Iolite Color Energy
Violet Iolite takes on the darker hue of winter's majesty, the
time just after the winter solstice. It inspires awe, and
invites a feeling of mystery and magic, nobility and luxury. It
is one of the most powerful rays in nature, helping us interpret
our dreams and inspiring us to great deeds and accomplishments.
Dark violet crystals are dream talismans, providing insight and
giving us a window to the soul beyond ordinary understanding.
Indigo Iolite combines the intuition of the violet ray with the
trust of the pure blue ray. It brings wisdom, truth, dignity and
spiritual mastery. A stone of judgment and long life, it
promotes introspection and can result in profound wisdom when
used well. Dark indigo Iolite provides honesty and is especially
good for religious and spiritual journeys, while light indigo
Iolite connects us to the natural world and improves our
appreciation of others.
Meditation with Iolite
By calming the overactive mind, Iolite aids in reaching a
focused state of meditation. It opens the visionary centers,
allowing for conscious communication with other realms and their
inhabitants.
Iolite Divination
The Divinatory meaning of Iolite: An alternative viewpoint you
have always rejected suddenly makes sense.
Iolite and the Angelic Realm
If your birthday falls in any of the following periods, an
Iolite of the color listed can be a valuable conduit to your
Guardian Angel. The table also provides the name of the Guardian
Angel of those born in the time period.
Iolite Amulets and Talismans
Iolite is used as an amulet to guide travelers safely home.
Iolite is a Dispeller Energizer crystal. Dispeller crystal
lattices act like a radiator with sharp points from which energy
can flow easily outward, carrying with it the undesirable
elements of your life. They are helpful talismans to relieve
everyday concerns of physical, mental and spiritual problems.
Dispellers are also known as Restorers. They put things right
again after they are out of balance.
Energizer crystals, such as Iolite, are powerful conduit
crystals for focusing and amplifying the Universal Life Force
and our energy to accomplish our goals. They aid in our efforts
to gain what we seek, enhance our lives, protect what we value,
and defend us from undesirable elements.
Iolite Feng Shui
Iolite utilizes Water energy, the energy of stillness, quiet
strength, and purification. It embodies potentialities
unrealized. It is yielding, formless, yet powerful. The Water
element brings power of regeneration and rebirth. It is the
energy of the circle of life. Use Iolite crystals to enhance any
space that you use for repose, calm reflection, or prayer. Water
energy is traditionally associated with the North area of a home
or room. It is associated with the Career and Life Path area,
its flowing energy assuring a balance of energy as your life
unfolds and flows.
Iolite in Ancient Lore and Legend
Iolite is not a legendary stone and has no lengends (yet!)
There is even iolite tea.
I prefer the darker more intense stones.
I own a few very pale ones,but mostly dark stones, and see, the
darker stones may be heat treated. To make the color intensify.
Pale ones are usually the very natural ones.
The actual word of iolite originates from the Ancient greek ios,
meaning purple. Iolite colors are usually blue, purple or
sometimes brown. The very best color of the gems is beautiful
purple-blue crystal. Iolite offers various colors in one stone.
Pleochroism (ability of gems to display more than one color) can
be found in Iolite and is also known as three different color
shades within the same stone. According to the viewing angle,
the gemstone will display violet blue, yellow grey, or possibly
pale blue.
