In my experience (southern NYS) engagement parties were
uncommon. A couple might be toasted at a family cook-out but
that was it. Gifts weren’t expected although an older relative
might give the couple a small family heirloom as a ‘Welcome to
the Family’ type of gift.

As we have noted on multiple occasions on this site, it is
always interesting how differently things are culturally,
geographically, or even by families!!!
My experiences with engagement parties (and they are limited as
my family has never done such a thing) is that they are NOT gift
giving occasions. A card or token gift might be ok, but really
not expected. And the parties are NOT to make money for the
wedding, but rather to introduce the new fiancee to anyone who
has not met them yet. They also tend to be smaller and more
intimate than weddings.
In most cases (from my experience), the party is more of an
excuse to... well... party! There are various social groups that
will get together periodically for backyard cookouts, game
nights, movie showings, ect., so they are always looking for an
"excuse" to gather. The engagement party is usually just one of
these parties, although they might include a cake or something.

Engagement parties have never really been a thing in the circles
I run in. Showers, yes, but not engagement parties.
Wedding socials (a fundraiser party where one purchases tickets
at $15-20 per person, then pays for drinks and tickets for
various and sundry prize draws, whilst listening and/dancing to
music that is ear-bleedingly loud and starting the buffet at
midnight) are very popular in less-conservative areas in my
province, and are starting to become more popular in my city as
well. When the majority holds to the belief, at least in public,
that alcohol and dancing are both morally repugnant, a social
doesn't really fly, but things have been changing.

In the UK, it used to be normal for the bride's parents to host
an informal event (drinks-and-finger-food was the norm in my
family, but others might do tea-and-cake: the point was, it was
just a get-together in your own regular style) so relatives and
friends could meet their daughter's future husband; the
bridegroom's parents would do the same to introduce the bride to
their friends-and-family. And that would be it, until the
wedding itself.

Engagement parties in my circle are basically unheard of. If
there was one, I would expect a low key kind of celebration - no
gifts, something to drink, nibbles, maybe cake. $100? Wow.

I agree. I *might* spend $100 total between the shower and
wedding for a couple.
