How should one respond if someone requests a change to a recipe?
Recipe Revised

For the past two years I've been making the boozy version of the
Jello Broken Window Glass Cake for the Potluck Queen's birthday
party:

(the picture icon in the dashboard doesn't work as it did
before)
Since acquiring my smartphone I started an Instagram account and
decided to post photos of this year's version. I had decided to
make two versions: one with a lemon-based batter and a
graham-cracker crust and the other with an orange-based batter
and a chocolate crust. Same four flavors for the cubes (lemon,
lime, orange, and black cherry), as last year's, which had a
cherry-based batter. I told her this last night at the bar only
to be told "I don't like citrus. Can you make it all cherry and
berries?"
I didn't know what to say. As often happens, it was this
afternoon when I realized I could have asked "Why didn't you
tell me this two years ago?" As I typed this I have no idea
whether that question would have been rude or not.
I was in the supermarket this afternoon, mentally flagellating
myself for being selfish about my planned Instagram photoshoot,
but ended up deciding to make the cubes in cherry, black cherry,
raspberry, and strawberry and all in chocolate pie crusts. That
it's her birthday party trumped my egotistical impulse to post
this on Instagram. So I bought a box of strawberry Jello
despite that I usually hate fake strawberry anything and have
never tasted that.
Now for the questions:
Had this not been her birthday party, was it rude of her to make
this request? Am I being an egotistical rhymes-with-witch for
my disappointment at not being able to make a more colorful
version of this for my photoshoot?

I think it depends on her tone and your relationship. Was she
asking or telling? If you're close enough and she asked nicely
(and was willing to take no as an answer), I don't see a
problem. And, if the conversation was taking place at a bar,
maybe alcohol can be blamed on her possibly overstepping.
If she was demanding, then yeah, it's rude.
BTW, the cakes look amazing.

Since posting this I remembered that she occasionally doesn't
speak her mind, especially when thinking that she might go too
far. A few minutes into the conversation I had what must have
been a wincing expression and she asked whether I had bought
everything. I still needed to buy the Cool Whip and had about
thirty boxes of Jello (only 6 are needed for this project) but
none of them were strawberry. I had bought two non-chocolate
pie crusts, but that was at Dollar Tree. I had stocked up on
chocolate ones a while back (I need four). I have a one-litre
bottle of vodka in the freezer.
So, this afternoon I made the decision I described in the first
post, despite my resentment at not having been informed earlier.
One of my movie groups does parties from time to time and I'd
love to do a round of these for them if I get adequate notice.
The picture I linked to comes from the first Joys of Jello
cookbook, which came out in 1962, before Cool Whip came out. At
least I don't have to deal with preparing Dream Whip.

I'm also with it depends on the tone...
However, just another take because I'm allergic to strawberries
and detest fake strawberry flavoring as well...you can do the
all berry version with cherry, black cherry, raspberry and
blackberry jello.

I can't say if she was rude or not, as I agree it depends on the
tone used and if it was a true request or not. However, I also
don't think you had to completely change your plans - or even
had to change them at all.
If it was truly a request, you could have absolutely said no,
you didn't have time to change course at this point, but would
definitely keep it in mind for future events.
I think it would have been nice for you to make one she would
enjoy since it's her birthday, but to change both is super
gracious. Maybe it's easier to do both that way for the recipe?
Speaking of recipes... would love to have this one!

I didn't commit to changing it at that moment, but after having
a conversation with another friend who doesn't know her, I have
to think that the biggest issue is why she didn't say something
about this two years ago after the first time.
Anyway, here is the recipe. This takes 3 days and cannot be
rushed:
Day One: Place quart or 1 litre bottle of Vodka in freezer.
Day Two: Glass Panes:
4 boxes Jello (.3oz, sugar-free version) Flavors of your
choice.
24 oz boiling water
1 qt vodka
Mix each box of Jello with 6 oz boiling water until dissolved.
Allow to cool at room temperature. 10 minutes after the steam
is gone, add 8 oz of freezing vodka to each and mix thoroughly.
Using rectangular containers (ones like from your local Chinese
takeout), spray a little cooking spray in each, pour each Jello
flavor into its own container, invert lids, and stack in
refrigerator overnight.
Day 3: Completion
2 pkgs Jello (flavors of choice)
2 cups boiling water
1 3/4 cups icy cold water
1 8 oz tub Cool Whip (sugar-free or regular; do not use any
reduced-fat version)
4 Keebler or Nabisco 9" pie crusts
Prepare each Jello package separately as before, only adding
cold water to each this time. Place in refrigerator until
thickened; spoon dragged through should leave a trail (about an
hour in most fridges, but start checking at 45 minutes). While
this is thickening, unmold the "glass panes" and cut into 1/2"
cubes. Separate cubes into two batches with equal amounts of
each flavor (if looking for a multi-colored effect).
When the Jello in the fridge is thickened, mix each one
separately with 1/2 of the Cool Whip, then reserve about 2/3 of
a cup from each batch. Gently mix in one batch of the cubes
into each. Spoon into the pie crusts. Use the reserved batter
to fill in any gaps around the edges and to cover the tops.
Cover with the plastic lids from the pie crusts and stack in the
fridge overnight.
Warning: Each pie usually yields 8 servings, which means that
each serving will contain a full ounce of vodka. For adults
only and be sure that your guests understand the alcohol content
and eat responsibly.
Edited to Add: If you plan on making cubes in only one or two
flavors, you don't have to make 4 of these. I originally made 4
pies because I had four cube flavors and was looking to
accommodate more than 20 guests. In which case cut the recipe
in half if you only want to make two and get 16 slices.
Edited to adjust liquid levels.

Last year you had a cherry based batter. This year, your
batters will be citrus flavored. Perhaps having so much more
citrus pushes it over her limit.
Are you making these for her birthday and just posting them on
IG since you have the opportunity? Or making them for a
photoshoot and using them for her birthday?
If the photoshoot is your primary objective, then make what you
want to show off.

I know you were looking forward to posting these, but for me it
would be more important that the birthday cake is enjoyable to
the person having a birthday. I’d be glad she finally said
something; it would be a hard thing to do.
I don’t want to give you a hard time, but it comes off as not
being gracious that this is more than a blip. I understand a
moment of disappointment, but it seems like you might rather
have pictures to post than make your friend happy.

She may not have realized that you planned to make it an annual
event. So the first year she politely thank you'd and gushed
about the cake. The second year you told her you'd be making it
again and she didn't know how to ask. The 3rd year, she admits
that she is not a fan of your chosen flavors.
Have you asked her if she'd rather have a completely different
style of cake for her birthday? She sounds like a nice friend
and probably realizes you enjoy making this cake so would
probably say no. But I'd test the waters next year and say you
ran across another recipe you'd like to try and see how she
responds.
