I married into a family that has the Catholic wedding ceremony
pretty early in the day, and the big fancy party in the evening.
Lots of people don't attend the ceremony. Like, a phenomenally
       high percentage.
I remember being vaguely aghast; it seemed very materialistic
and uncaring, to me. But everyone else seemed to think it was
       fine.
Also, the bride and groom really didn't interact or mingle with
anyone; there wasn't a receiving line. I guess they saw how very
sparsely the church was populated, but if only one or two people
were absent, they might not have even noticed.
I think it depends, in part on what the bride knows of your
       family.

My nephew married into a similar family. I knew they were
expecting close to 250 for the reception. I was stunned that
there were less than 125 at the afternoon wedding and concerned
they were having a lot of no shows. But the evening reception
was overflowing with people. I think they probably had more
attend than planned. I also learned it was very common practice.

Can you bring something to eat so they won't have to wait for
food, or get something before you arrive so if there is a wait
       they won't be hungry?

I think in GENERAL you should attend the ceremony.
But in this particular case, you are actually thinking of your
husband and the couples so it is quite thoughtful.
I would bring food for the kids that you know they would like
and just quietly give it to them. Nobody will care.
Also I don't know what kind of reception it would be...if it is
loud and flashing lights it may be good to have headphones for
       them.
