My brother and his family host a New Year's Day party -
black-eyed peas (Hoppin' John), collard greens and corn bread.
We play games. Yesterday it was Left, Right, Center. Sometimes
it's Mexican Train (dominos).

My mother always said that you should wear a new article of
clothing on New Year's Day. I'm not sure why but it's a
tradition that I've tried to carry on. This year, I didn't get
anything new for Christmas, except for a new toque. So I'm
going to wear that over to the in-laws for dinner in a couple
hours. My husband has a new t-shirt his daughter gave him and
my Dad has a new shirt my brother gave him.

I was told you wear new clothes to ensure that you will be
prosperous in the new year. My family has the belief that you
shouldn't wash clothes on New Years. Washing clothes means you
will wash someone out of your life in the next year.

I love the idea of wearing something new on New Year's Day.
Please tell me more. Does what you're wearing a few minutes
after midnight count? Or does it start when you wake up on New
Year's Day? Do you get to buy two new outfits---one for New
Year's Eve and one for the day after?
Our tradition is for New Year's Eve. That is Favorite Foods
Day. Any food that we eat must be considered a Favorite Food.
It doesn't matter if it makes a traditional meal. Our favorite
foods change with time so it's fun shopping every year. Shrimp,
crabmeat, peanut butter fudge, Starbucks, licorice, filet
mignon, etc. Anything goes.
For New Year's Day we always eat pork and sauerkraut and
potatoes.

For us, it was when you got up New Year's Day that you wore
something new. And Kimpossible, that makes complete sense.
Wish it worked... I have yet to win the lottery! ;D

I have heard that one is to do on New Year's day what one wants
to continue doing in the New Year. Does it surprise anyone that
I was sewing? ;D I don't have any new clothes to wear...

I want to say: "sort your life out, Pattycake!", but I'm not
sure the trans-Atlantic differences would show that up as a
joke!
I mean it as a 'humorous aside'. ;D ;D ;D

Years ago, we were visiting Mr. Thipu’s family in Vermont for
New Year’s Eve. We were all invited to a party by a neighbor
who happened to be of Scottish heritage.
After a nice dinner, he proposed his version of a Hogmanay
first-footing. It sounded like fun and it was fun if a little
bit eerie in the Highland way.
A few minutes before Midnight the Dark Man would come to the
door and knock three times. Our hostess would meet him with an
offering of dark fruitcake and a shot glass of whiskey. The
rest of us would be keeping silence as we gathered around the
fireplace.
The Dark Man would carefully step over the threshold of the
house and accept the offerings without he or his greeter
exchanging a word. He’d eat the cake and drink the whiskey.
Then, he’d throw the empty glass into the fireplace.
Because he was the tallest man among us and had jet black hair,
nephew 1 was designated the Dark Man. He was up for the game and
everyone settled in place. Once the glass was thrown, everyone
cheered, Auld Lang syne was sung and we watched the ball drop in
Times Square.
As I understand the tradition, the Dark Man is a sort of
sin-eater. He comes to rid the house of bad luck accumulated
during the past year. The bad luck is concentrated in the
fruitcake. The whiskey is symbolic of a new year and a clean
start.
Whatever our host had in mind, it was a novel and wonderful way
to celebrate the changing of the calendar.
