Family New Year Traditions

In my family there’s the belief that what you do on New Year’s
Day you will do for the rest of the year. So, we make sure to
eat well and laugh a lot.
I’m not superstitious but I paid our monthly bills today instead
of waiting for tomorrow. There’s no sense in tempting fate, is
there?
What do you do on New Year’s Day?

Yep, there's no bill paying or chores on New Year's day. I was
also taught you never have your wallet empty of money as the new
year turns over unless you want to be broke all year.
We also always eat cabbage with potatoes, black eyed peas, and
cornbread (though no cornbread for me). It's always cooked the
day before and eaten for both NYE AND NY's day My husband's
family did sauerkraut with keilbasa. Now I add turkey keilbasa
to the black eyed peas.

If I’m fortunate enough to have the day off, we eat and watch
the “Twilight Zone” marathon and maybe some football

Our tradition is pork and kraut. My first New Years in Texas, I
drove myself crazy looking for kraut. The stores must have
remembered my complaint. No issues the last 2 years.

I have a similar belief but it’s that whatever you do on New
Year’s Eve will Carey I to the next year and you do it all year
long.

My family is of German origin so roast pork and sauerkraut is
the necessary New Year’s dinner.
We also had what we called ‘neffles’. Those were a sort of
noodle made with egg. We’d mix them up in a bowl and cut them
into boiling water. The result looked like puffy little clouds.
Served up with pork gravy and sauerkraut they were wonderful.

My family doesn't have a New Year's Day tradition, but I have
one. Every January 1, I check my credit report on
www.annualcreditreport.com. I only check one agency's report,
then I repeat with the other two agencies on May 1 and September
1.

My mother always said that you should wear a new article of
clothing on New Year's Day. I'm not sure why but it's a
tradition that I've tried to carry on. This year, I didn't get
anything new for Christmas, except for a new toque. So I'm
going to wear that over to the in-laws for dinner in a couple
hours. My husband has a new t-shirt his daughter gave him and
my Dad has a new shirt my brother gave him.

Ooh, I like this! I rarely buy new clothes [reduce, reuse,
recycle - much comes from family], but I could treat myself to a
new 'support garment'. ;)
[My bra is nearly a unsupportive as what it's supporting! ;D]

I'm not superstitious at all in my normal life but I'm pretty
sure I've eaten black eyed peas, some sort of cabbage or other
green, pork and corn bread every New Years Day since I was off
baby food. How they are served can change up every year.
This year, DD and her BF were flying out on NY Day and asked if
I'd make an early lunch. So I did Reuben style sandwiches with a
smoked pickled pork but also did empanadas filled with ground
pork, tasso ham, cabbage and black eyed peas in a cornmeal
crust. We loved them and decided they'll become a NY Day
tradition. All my NY's food in a nice little bundle.
