So this is a baby blanket with a 4-row repeat? Of the rank &
file stitch? You could use a hand-held click counter, or get a
computerized app like Knit Companion ( there’s a a free
version) that might work well for you.You can download the
pattern into the app, and then mark off the rows as you knit
       them.

       Oooo, I like this

Sounds like something I used to do when I cross stiched....
       Thanks for the idea
I was worried about learning a new tracking method at the same
time as trying a new pattern

I originally was using a highlighter to mark where I'd left off
       - found out that cross stitching a second version for another
family member got complicated because I'd already marked the
pages up from the first version (second version stitched on a
different count of fabric to make a larger version of the
design). I have no idea where the original went (honeymoon site
for one couple) but MIL still has her larger one on the wall at
her house (they had lived in the area of the "landmark" feature
of that design series). Never did get the Alamo pattern...might
want to...once I finish a few of the dozen or so UFOs in the
       embroidery portfolio..'
The Post It notes let me get the second one stitched up...

To all you wonderful knitters helping me.....a huge "THANKS!"
Also, could someone look up a rank and file image and let me
know if it would actually work for a baby blanket?
I would like to eventually be able to do the lotus pattern, but
need to build my skills first.
:( I also have issues using needles smaller than US size 8

I may try the bamboo stich before rank and file (2 repeating
       rows as opposed to 4)

I am also doing a 4-row pattern and what I do is make a copy of
the instructions and use highlighting tape to mark the row I’m
       working on.

Honestly, this is about the best way to do it.
I think a baby blanket in that pattern would be lovely.

I make a “lace book” so I don’t lose track of where I’m at.
I made a knitted winter scarf using the 4 row Feather&Fan
pattern. I wrote the instructions for each round on a separate
3”x5” note card. I accidentally dropped the lace book on the
floor and lost track of where I was, and did the best I could.
       After 4” of knitting, I realized I had guessed wrong. <sigh> I
now use a big paper clip to confine the stack together to keep
the current row’s instructions on top of the pile of cards.
I am working on the Between Meals Centerpiece. I wrote the
instructions for each round on a separate 3”x5” note card. 60
rounds = 60 notecards. I keep the pile(!) of cards in a ziplock
sandwich bag with the current round on the top.

       New question....
When knitting with two strands of yarn how do you figure out
       what needle size to use?
(Here's hoping that if each needs size 6 needles it would be 6 +
       6 = size 12)
