LOL! I would have to hunt up the pictures on his facebook, and
he has so many it would take forever. But there's a set of old
luggage - round ones, they're really cool, and he has a
casserole dish exactly like one I got from my mom when she died,
but his is a different colour. No, I wouldn't swipe them,
because I bet if I asked real nice, he'd just give them to me!
but I won't do that, I have enough stuff.

Just for information generally: in most countries antiques are
exempt from customs duty. It's just a question of how each
country defines "antique" (Canada is unusual in setting the bar
as low as 50 years: 100 years, as in the UK and USA, is more
common) and what documentation it requires you to supply. So if
sending a vintage item across a border, it's always worth
checking this out beforehand!

As soon as I read "I had to pay fees to pick it up", I *knew* it
was sent by UPS.
UPS always charges duty fees on parcels, whether they require
duty to be paid or not. They say they're doing for you as a
courtesy, acting as your customs broker.
Sadly, you have only three options:
- Pay the stupid fee to UPS, they won't waive it.
- If you live in a bigger city, you can say you'll act as your
own broker. See if you have a brokerage house somewhere close
to you and have them send it there... UPS won't like it and will
say they have to send it to some other center, far away so you
won't want to travel.
- Ask your friend to send things to you by any other means than
UPS. This is tricky because some eBay sellers only send to
Canada via UPS.
The mixer is beautiful... and UPS sucks (for this one really
crappy thing they do)

Yeah, all of that would be difficult - they lied to me - the
charges on the paper on the box clearly said brokerage fee, but
when the guy called he said it was COD charges so I wouldn't
have thought to say I would be my own broker. I live over an
hour from the city, so yes, it would be difficult for me to go
to a centre to pick up. However, it would NOT be difficult for
him to send via some other carrier, but for some reason he likes
the particular store he deals with! I will pass your info on to
him and see what he can do in the future. I always send to him
via post office, but I don't send breakables whereas he usually
does and they pack it very well for him.
Having said all that, and hoping I don't jinx myself, so far the
charge has not appeared on my credit card bill!

Is there any reason he couldn't request the store use a
different shipper? Or give him the packed item and he ship it
himself? If he told them UPS was charging exorbitant fees to go
across the border they might be willing to be more flexible....

Sorry I wasn't clear - he likes the UPS store that he takes it
to ship from. He doesn't have it shipped directly from the store
he bought it from.

Well drat.... So, I guess you need to figure out if you want to
drop it, or somehow let him know that this current arrangement
doesn't really work for you.

Yeah, when I emailed to let him know, I did let him know that if
UPS asked for money again, I would be refusing the package
because I can't afford it, as nice as the gifts are! I keep
looking at my credit card account, and I still haven't been
charged, so maybe they either wrote my card number down wrong,
or they did see in their paperwork that it was supposed to be a
gift and didn't charge me. I am waiting another billing cycle
before I sigh in relief!
