especially since I had diarrhoea too, so I resigned myself to
feeling ill for a few days. I did not call in sick since I only
sit a few feet from the bathroom

Both ends? You need to be off
Our policy states 48 hours off after last episode - just
vomiting would be considered ok
Our office policy essentially states "Call in sick and we'll
kill you." I prefer not to call in sick unless it's physically
impossible for me to get to work.
That's odd that the "policy" is to come in when sick but 2 TL's
were ready to send you home because they heard you being ill.

Bet they have quite a lot of office-transmitted illnesses.
We've had norovirus around the office lately. Fortunately I seem
to have missed it.

It surprised me too, frankly, because I knew that if I had gone
home sick there would have been hell to pay when I returned.

If you are not contagious and it is a one time thing for the
day, I think you are fine to stay at work. Pregnancy would be
the exception to the one time thing, though I think if I was
sick multiple times in a day, I wouldn't want to stay at work!
If you are contagious, home you go and stay there until you
haven't been sick for at least 24 hours and preferably 48 hours.
I'll be honest, I'm sick that often that if I was contagious I
probably wouldn't know about it until someone else got it.
Case in point - a couple of months ago I started throwing up on
a Sunday morning. It felt different from my usual weird stomach
so I assumed (having made a new chicken dish the night before)
that I had poisoned myself, especially since I had diarrhoea
too, so I resigned myself to feeling ill for a few days. I did
not call in sick since I only sit a few feet from the bathroom -
I just loaded up on Imodium and my anti-sickness meds.
A week later DH got it. So apparently it was a bug, not food
poisoning. Unfortunately, as he's a postman and is frequently
out delivering for hours at a time, he did have to call in sick.
Fortunately nobody at work came down with it.
Being in a communal bathroom while someone is going at it from
either is awful. If I had that I would not want to subject
coworkers to the audio and olfactory outputs I was making. Also
can you be sure that the area is even remotely sanitary after a
bout of that? I've heard that a toilet can "spray" up anywhere
from 2 to 20 feet when flushed.
Mythbusters busted that one a long while ago.

I think if you're contagious or unable to work you should go
home if possible. If it's something non-catching, you can still
do your work and you're not likely to make an unexpected
addition to the lobby carpet, you *may* stay at work.
I once had to stand up and run a full day's training course with
what I think was a case of food poisoning (either that or a
24-hour bug). I relied on Imodium and *really* frequent rest
breaks. The client had enchiladas for lunch. Alas!

I had horrible migraines from the age of 3 until I was finally
treated properly at age 30. I also caught every bug, virus, and
'thing' that was going around in those days. (You know *that
kid* in school who caught everything? Yeah, that was me).
If I stayed home every time I was under the weather, I'd never
have been able to hold down a job at all. And yet, all through
those years, I not only held down a fulltime job, but a
part-time job, AND sewed in my free time(3rd job), and went to
college part-time. I was so young and so miserable most of the
time, but it had to be done.

There are things that can be worked through, miserable though it
is, and things that can't. Frequent vomiting attacks can't be.
Pneumonia shouldn't be (says the person who tried).
I had a person at a training session politely ask, during a
break, "Do you think I could leave early? I think I'm having a
heart attack." The answer was yes, and let me call an ambulance
right now.
