A few members of my department gave individual gifts this year
but most of us just brought treats for the table. I brought
popcorn because I knew there will be too many sweets. Some
didn't bring anything at all. It's all fine. Don't worry too
       much whatever you decide.

I have managers above me and supervisory/foremen that give
directions to me, but through the holiday season I will receive
gift baskets from outside vendors that I will share with my shop
level staff as opposed to toting the baskets home with me. I
have other departments that love their treats and bring in all
sorts of things to the kitchen for nibbling. Items that don't
share as well (on the shop level), I will leave to the kitchen
       treat area.
This year, I had peer co-workers that were eyeing the treats
within a basket that had arrived on a day I wasn't in, and were
rather put out when I opened up that basket with the foremen and
then distributed most of the treats (packaged biscuits or
chocolate covered (nuts, fruits, et al).
My own rule of thumb hinges on not gifting upwards and
definitely sharing downwards. I don't have direct reports
myself, but know that it's a lot better to share the treats with
the folks that are the money makers (my shop/production level
       staff).
