Using another's garbage can?
DIR By: Isisnin

So currently I am living alone. Therefore I am the only person
putting garbage into my garbage can (meaning the barrel that
will be put onto the curb for city pickup).
A few times, when I have gone out to my driveway to put my
garbage into my garbage can, I've noticed trash already in
there. So clearly someone walked onto and down my driveway to
put their trash into my garbage can. It irked me so I moved the
can behind my house and voila! - no "stranger trash".
Well, I just saw someone walking down the sidewalk, turn walk up
the neighbor's driveway and throw their trash into the
neighbor's garbage can. Then they walked back down the drive and
continued on their way.
So is this a new thing? a common thing? would you do it? any
rules in play here? Rude or no?

i wouldn't walk down someone's driveway but if I have garbage in
my hands and they are on the curb then I wouldn't see an issue
with throwing it in. My cans are really big and I don't have a
lot of trash so i wouldn't care if anyone else used them - as
long as I have room for my trash.

Depends on the amount of trash. Like Wolfie said, if it's
someone in passing, with a small bit of trash, I'd rather they
drop it in my trash can than on the ground. But if they're doing
it because their can is full and they don't want to pay the
extra bag fee like some places have, if they didn't ask my
permission then I would be very annoyed. Generally though around
here people keep their cans near or behind the house until pick
up day, but that wouldn't stop a neighbour with extra bags from
dropping it in your can on pick up day, if you didn't see them.

LOL! reminds me of a few years back. Garbage night I'd put my
cans on the curb empty. Then go in and do housekeeping. Go back
out to put my garbage in the barrel -n and it was full! So I'd
have to go get another barrel. I thought it was my tenant.
Vented to my friend next door - and it was my friend!. She was a
tenant and the landlord had their barrel behind a fence in their
backyard. Tenant didn't feel comfortable going into the
backyard. I told her that she had to open a conversation with
her landlord but she was welcome to use my barrel(s). Just
please leave me space. She could even take an empty barrel of
mine and bring it to the curb for her/our use - feel free to
bring them too and from the curb.
She spoke to her landlord. Thankfully as all subsequent tenants
use the landlord's barrel.

There can be a problem with passers-by throwing in trash. In
some communities there are rather strict guidelines for
separating trash. Here, there are separate receptacles for
clean paper (newspapers, cereal boxes etc.), recyclables (washed
glass and plastic), compostables (food scraps and garden waste)
as well as miscellaneous trash.
Material in the wrong containers can open householders to
fines. Someone dropping his banana peel into the recyclable bin
can prove costly.

Is it a trash bag of trash or just pieces of trash? If a trash
bag, it sounds like someone has decided they don't want to deal
with moving trash cans to the curb and back for their 1 or 2
bags of trash so make use of neighbor's available cans. So I do
find that wrong.
However, if someone is just walking by and is depositing a
single piece of trash, then I have no issues.
Our last neighborhoods have "backdoor" trash pick up which
means the cans stay toward the back of the house and the trash
retrievers come up our driveway to get the trash. I absolutely
love it because we never have to remember to put the trash to
the curb or deal with people leaving their trash barrels out for
several days. It sounds so trivial, but I hope to never live in
a neighborhood where I have to deal with getting garbage to the
curb for pickup.

I wouldn't like anyone using my trash can. I like to keep it as
clean and stink free as possible. If a stranger use my garbage
can, I'd actually prefer a bag of trash than a stray item like a
banana peel or fast food cup. A tightly tied bag is at least
clean(ish).
I can't imagine using a garbage can at a private residence.
Feels intrusive. If I must, I throw trash away at public bins.

It takes... something... to essentially trespass on someone's
property and go up their driveway to drop your trash in their
trash can. :o I definitely would not be happy about that.
Dropping something in my can at the curb, as long as it was
before pick-up? I'd probably be OK with it. But if the pick-up
has come and gone, I'd be peeved.
If whatever it is makes a mess, regardless of time of drop in?
I'd be peeved.
I circumvent this by putting out a bag of garbage, rather than a
can. I got sick of chasing the can all over the neighbourhood
on windy days. The recycle and green bins tend to stay put a
bit better because they aren't round.

This problem just keeps showing up - I remember it popping up a
few times on the old forum.
In my not-always-correct opinion, the only time you can use
another’s garbage bin is on pick-up day when you see the truck
heading towards it. Otherwise, take it home to your own bin.
My friend was putting out her bin the night before pickup, and
oftentimes when she went to put more trash in her bin the next
morning, it was full of other people’s trash. So now, she waits
until the morning to put it out - a little inconvenient for her,
but better than not being able to use her own bin.

One time, someone tied a bag of dog poop to the handle of my
bin. After the truck already came >:(
