Is this line cutting?

The other thread reminded me about this.
Last Friday, I went to Ulta, the line was sooo long and I heard
the employees talking about the line was longer today than Black
Friday. So I'm standing in line and I was about the 5th person,
2 people in front of me who I assume were mother and daughter,
then a man in front of me. There were 2 cashiers.
The mother and daughter kept looking around and saying, "Where
is grandma, it's almost our turn." Well grandma shows up just
as "I'll help the next customer in line." is yelled out. Well
all 3 marched up to the register. Daughter paid first, mom
next and of course there was a issue with grandmas items. There
was lots of walking back and forth, asking for a manager, taking
items off, etc. Grandma, did not get any items that day.
The good news is I held my tongue and I ended up not getting my
whole load cuz I was tired of carrying everything. So I ended
up just replacing my 20 year old round brush.
So, was that line cutting?

It was annoying, for sure - it gets teeth-grindingly frustrating
when other shoppers have a lot of business to conduct at the
till, even when the more rational part of us acknowledges that
this is just people going about their lives and not a dire,
malicious plot to inconvenience us. I misread your post at first
to mean that Grandma wasn't shopping since she left with
nothing, but if (as I now read it) she did have items that she
abandoned at the till for whatever reason, then that compounds
the frustration. And yes, she did indeed cut the line, even if
she eventually left empty-handed.
Your post reminds me to pack an extra couple of rations of
patience today as DH and I are off to our closest city to do
some Christmas shopping. I suspect we'll see several variants on
your scenario today!

Yes, to me it is line cutting since the 3 of them were
attempting 3 separate transactions. If Grandma was just bringing
her items to include in her daughter's or granddaughter's
transaction, then I would not consider it line jumping.
A few years back, I was at a designer outlet store the weekend
after Tday and they were having a huge sale. They had a roped
off line meandering through the store that probably had 40 to 50
people standing in the line. As you entered the store an
employee stated there would be no "saving a space in line."
There were several employees manning the line to make sure that
was enforced. I liked it but was surprised the store was
dedicating so much resources to que management. I asked an
employee about it and she told me the previous year they had
problems with groups coming in and having one person immediately
get in line and then having others trying to join the person or
just handing him or her their items to purchase. It became such
a problem that several huge arguments broke out between
customers.

Since there where three separate transactions with three
separate people, yes, Grandma cut in line.

I wouldn’t consider that line cutting. Some transactions take
longer. I would have treated it like one big transaction. And
what if one person was breaking their purchases up into multiple
transactions? They are allowed to do that. I don’t expect them
to get to the back of the line again.

Yes, it is line cutting. Grandma should have gone to the end. If
they wanted to check-out together, then all to the end of the
line. However, I see it so much that I just tell myself to
breathe and let it slide.
The issues with Grandma's transaction have nothing to do with
whether she cut or not. She would have had these issues no
matter where she stood in line. However, I completely understand
how escalatingly frustrating it can be to watch someone cut in
front of you AND take forever at the register. You would find me
having to REALLY concentrate on my breathing!!!

I wouldn't. It is line cutting (or, over here in Rightpondia,
queue-barging).

Of course not. These people have done all their shopping and
then queued for it. If they need to break it up, so be it. The
difference is, they haven't stolen an advantage on everyone else
who has been waiting.

waiting. Double frustration if it's the express line.

When I worked retail, the company started having people who were
using the store credit card swipe their card at the very
beginning of the transaction, not at the end. Two years after
starting this policy, we still had customers who did not grasp
this. I can remember standing there, scanner in hand, unable to
do anything because the customer was not swiping their card but
instead fumbling through coupons or trying to decide if they
would save more money by doing multiple transactions or deciding
if they really wanted to buy that gray sweater.
No matter how many times I would say, "Please swipe your card so
we can start the transaction," or "Please swipe your card now,
we can scan all the coupons and let the computer chose the one
that saves you the most money," or "Please swipe your card. I
can't start ringing you up until you swipe the card," there were
customers, many of them repeat customers, who seemed very
surprised that they needed to use their card first thing.
And I would stand there, and stand there, feeling sorry for the
customers in line, who were patiently waiting. But I was not
allowed to just take the credit card and scan it, much though
there were times I wanted to. There were times I wanted to tell
the customer to step aside and spend all the time they needed to
figure out which coupon to use so I could start helping the next
customer. But we were not allowed to do that, either.
Cashiers know the customer is taking a long time. They can try
to guide the customer. But many customers simply do not listen
to clear and simple instructions from the cashier. It was very
frustrating.

Speaking as a cashier, grandma having questions and issues with
her merchandise was not rude but she would have been politer to
ask the cashier about them first so the cashier could have
delegated them out and rung up the others in her party while
awaiting an answer. E.g. to check a price, the cashier would
call someone from that department who would come up, look at the
item, then go back to the dept and find a matching item, then
bring that up to the register to be used for a price. That
requires the cashier doing nothing but waiting. But if the
cashier is told about this from the start, they can delegate
that and then ring up one of the others while waiting.
It is possible that she didn't know this, but most customers are
experienced at shopping and really do know this. Also there are
a lot of customers who don't like the cashier multi-tasking.
They prefer the cashier to do.one.thing.at.a.time - in.
the.order.the.customer.decides. It is rude to slow down the line
like that, but the only thing the cashier can do is explain
"let's get all your questions resolved at once. And while we
wait, May I take another customer?". It's a fifty-fifty shot
whether or not the customer agrees. (fyi: I only ask if I can
take another customer, if I can see that the next customer only
has one or two things so the 1st customer doesn't end up waiting
for the 2nd customer to finish cashing out.)
Regarding cutting in line, yea she was cutting. It seems mild,
but cutting like that can get out of control. Some customers
will even send someone into the line as soon as they get in the
store to hold "their spot". In a forum of retail employees, one
person said that last holiday season this was so bad in their
store that people got into shouting matches. This year, that
store now has someone to monitor the lines and ensure no one
cuts.
I don't envy that "line monitor".

But where does it end, holding a place for 1, 2, 3, 4 or more?
