and her boyfriend moving into our apartment and I told her that
DH and I had thought more about it and that it wouldn't be
possible for the reasons I mentioned above, and she was
perfectly understanding about it. She asked with a grin if she
might move there "when he dies" (he's 75), and I told her of
course! So, all's well.

working full time and to be hanging out at the house and playing
on the internet? Shoot, that's what most of the 75 year olds I
know do!

guess the OP is thinking about the entire 16 years of behavior.

know people who plan to retire by then.
> Wolfie, I think you might be in Europe? In US the expected
retirement age is more like 65, and getting older as congress is
gradually raising the age we can collect social security. Some
people do retire earlier, but it’s not super common. Those
people I know that have done that typically have planned
extensively, or worked for the government or were in the
military all of their lives. In my line of work, I’ll have to
pay my own healthcare if I retire before a certain age, and
that’s really pricey. I talked to a coworker today who told me
he’d love to retire, but he will be 70 before it’s possible.

I'm in the U.S. I and quite a few of my friends and relatives
retired in our fifties. It really depends on a number of
factors, such as, whether you are debt free, and whether you
have an employer provided, or self funded pension, in addition
to social security. There are quite a few people who get
pensions, not just employees of the government or military. And
many of these pensions allow you retire in your fifties or early
sixties, you just receive a lower monthly pension check. So, if
you are debt free you are more likely to be able to retire
earlier with a smaller pension check. You are also better able
to afford it if you've managed to save a decent amount of money.
But yes, health insurance takes a chunk, until you reach 65.
Word of unsolicited advice, one of the best ways to get money
into savings is to set up for automatic deposit to your savings
account, ira, or whatever. I started doing that when I was
middle aged, but I wish I'd started sooner.

He’s 75? So he’s retired lol. Not a useless laze about. Retired
people often just sit around playing internet, watching tv ect.
Now if you said he was 40 and home every day, that’s one
thing.....but he’s retired!

Did you read the whole thread? He wasn't always 75 and the OP
said he's been living off her friend since he was in his 50's.
And even if one doesn't have a job, there are other ways of
contributing. Does he at least help around the house?
eta: But I guess it's not for us to judge. If she's happy with
the situation, that's her business.

I didn't get the impression that was the issue. It sounds like
he makes little or no financial contribution (for rent/mortgage,
utilities, food, etc.) and that I believe is the issue.

yes, a retired person might not need to work, but they should
have a retirement income that is used to help with expenses.
