I'm w/ the people who say that gifts given to babies are really
given to parents.
I'll also say that "baby gifts" are a specific category of
gifts.
So I agree that if you show up with a silver baby cup for the
two littlest, it might not seem as uncaring to the oldest.
But if you give the 2yo a toy he can play with now, it's going
to run a huge risk of hurting the feelings of the older kids.

Bring gifts for all 4...if you intend to give them in public. If
you don't want to do it for the kids, do it for your friend so
she doesn't need to deal with the fall out. I might suggest
books as an idea or a game that you could play with them.
But if it is a savings bond or necklace or something keepsake
that is more for your friend than the baby at this point, you
could give it to her privately.

For birthdays, only the birthday child gets a gift from me. If
the gift is a present to a newborn, I always get the older
siblings something. It has to be hard for them to all of the
sudden not be the focus of attention. If I am talking to a new
mom in the store, I always take the time to say something to the
older child. I know what it's like to feel invisible.

Oh, I realised that I never provided an update to this thread!
I ended up buying a romper suit for the new baby, and a fun
board game that the other kids could share and enjoy. My friend
later texted me to say that the board game was a huge hit wither
her older three! So I'm really glad I didn't leave them out.
