Great to see you here, gmatoy!
I'm doing hats (as mentioned on the old forum), and owing to the
amount of "other stuff" happening in my life right now, my
research into one-colour-only hat patterns in chunky/Aran wool
       has stalled...
If anyone has a favourite hat pattern that I can knit in the
round they would be happy to link to, I would be delighted.
Apologies for being so lazy - I'm itching to get knitting, but
internet research takes so much time! The lady in the yarn shop
couldn't sell me a book of hat patterns, but referred me to
Ravelry; I shall end up there, sooner or later, but I can't
afford to lost a whole week just yet. ;) ;) ;)

I luv this thread! Always ready to talk about the holidays. :P
I have been browsing Etsy and other places for red mercury
ornaments. (It's wonderful how many places, not Etsy, still have
old Christmas items but now on sale so things I wouldn't buy in
October/November/December are affordable.) I have a lipstick red
tree with red lights and red ornaments. I may at some point in
the future go more subtle and get a white tree, though not
flocked, and when I do then I will switch to white, clear and
silver mercury ornaments. At any rate it's fun to talk about it
       and browse the online stores.
I already have two menus set for Christmas dinner and haven't
been able to decide (yet) between them. But I also have the day
before as well. Here they are (and if you have any thoughts
about my choice for Christmas dinner feel free to express it:
       Christmas Eve Breakfast 2018
       Toast
       Herb omelet
       Bacon
       Breakfast banana split
       Christmas Eve Dinner 2018
       Sparkling water
BLT salad with buttermilk dressing (

       />)
       Garlic- and caper-roasted mushrooms
       Dover sole meunière
       See’s candy
       Christmas Breakfast 2018
       Fried potatoes & onions
       Melon
       Bacon
       Cilbir
       Bloody Mary (virgin)
       Christmas Dinner 2018
       Champagne
       Shrimp cocktail
       Caesar salad
       T-bone steak (grilled)
       Steamed artichoke
       Garlic bread
Apple or cherry pie with vanilla ice cream
       or
       Champagne
       Sour cherry soup
       Tangerine and olive salad
       Chicken Bastilla
       Carmelized shallots
       Steamed artichoke
Apple or cherry pie with vanilla ice cream

Oh wow, this is a topic I really need right now!
This year, I want to make fruitcake. Because there's nothing so
awesome as good fruitcake. But -- I hate those little glace
cherries and candied citron and that sort of thing. I want to
do it all with dried fruits. I can substitute out the fruits,
no problem, but I desperately need a base recipe to start with.
Does anyone have a tried-and-true good fruitcake recipe?
Preferably something handed down for a few generations and
       involving copious amounts of liquor?
I have done a substantial amount of research and Googling for
"old-fashioned" fruitcake recipes, but I really want something
that I know has a good track record, so I don't waste six months
anticipating something that's going to turn out to be crap.
       Thanks in advance!

I’ve just realised that while my idea of a Christmas menu can be
broad, it is still apparently very traditional.
I was reading through Amara’s menu (which is full of tasty
things I’d like to eat) and my brain just balked at the idea of
steak for Christmas dinner. I love steak, but it just feels so
wrong for Christmas! Is it just me?

You're not alone in having a set of expectations. Our office
held a potluck near either Thanksgiving or Christmas and I was
the only one who brought anything remotely American traditional.
There was lasagna, and curry, and Vietnamese spring rolls, and
a bunch of other stuff - none of which I tend to associate with
       Thanksgiving/Christmas dinner.
That said, my friends have celebrated Christmas at a steakhouse
venue often enough that I don't have a response to the idea of
       steak at Christmas.

Oh man, I love those potlucks! You get things like har gow
dumplings, and lumpia, and flan, and samosas... *happy moan*
For T-day and Xmas, though, I am all about the turkey, for sure.
       :)

My project of the year is going to be mug mats. I bought fabric
with saying printed on them. I will cut out a saying, add fabric
until it is big enough for a mug and a muffin/scone/or cookie.
Then layer it with batting and a bottom fabric and then quilt
it. The sayings I have bought are: inspirational, for dog
lovers, cat lovers, teachers, and nurses. I also have one with
Irish blessing and one about sisters. Since I will be doing a
lot of these, I am hoping the projects will go quickly and that
I like the finished projects. Because of other commitments, I
will not start them until this summer.
