Who gets the money?

A relative wanted the forum's opinion on a matter. She asked me
to share the following for feedback:
"I need an opinion. Here is the situation. Person #1 and person
#2 went on an educational trip together. Person #1 worked to
raise the money to go on the trip and it was matched 50/50 by
person #2. On the flight back person #1 and person #2 were
offered money from the airline to postpone their flight because
it was overbooked. They both accepted and waited several extra
hours in the airport. Person #2 believes that because they paid
for half of person#1's trip that they should get half of the
person #1's money as well as their own money. Person #1 says
that they both had to wait the extra time which is what the
money was for and that they should get all of their money and
that person #2 should get all of their money. What do you think
sounds like the correct approach?"

Actually the choices are:
Person 1 gets all the money
Person 1 and 2 split the money
Person 2 gets all the money
I think Person 1 and 2 splitting the money is a good compromise.

I agree with bopper, they should split the money.
Person #1 wouldn't have been able to take the trip without
Person #2 underwriting half of it, so Person #1 wouldn't have
been in the situation to receive any refund if not for Person
#2's generosity.
In a perfect world, Person #1 offers all the money and says, "If
it weren't for you, I wouldn't have had this awesome experience,
take the whole voucher!" and Person #2 responds with, "No, we'll
split it."
Person #1 has a kind benefactor in his/ her life, the travel
voucher is not worth burning that bridge over.

This. Regardless of how the money is split, it is not worth
damaging the relationship. Especially because it is essentially
found money.

I think they both sound like greedy individuals. But I also
don't think there is a specific right answer.
Person 2 gifted the money for the trip to Person 1. Person 2 had
no expectation of recovering any money associated with the gift.
If Person 1 had turned down the delayed flight, Person 2 would
not have had a chance of recovering money either. I can see
where Person 2 would have expected Person 1 to offer the money
but I don't think they had the right to demand it.
However, Person 1 was essentially getting a trip for 1/2 off.
Person 1 should have recognize the generosity of Person 2 and
offered to give the money to Person 2.
The most gracious outcome of the whole thing would be as NFPWife
said. Person 1 offer the full amount back to Person 2. Person 2
suggest they split it. By splitting it they are both at the
original agreement... each one paying the cost of Person 1's
trip.
edited to add... If I were Person 2, I would not offer to fund
parts of trips for Person 1 in the future.

I had to think about this a bit but my conclusion is that Person
2 should get all the money, up to the amount s/he lent to Person
1.
I am basing this on the assumption that #2 subsidized #1 because
#1 could not raise the total amount, and therefore would not
have been able to go on the trip if #2 had not stepped up. I'm
sure #2 meant it to be a gift, not a loan, but if I were #1, I
would be feeling like this is an opportunity to pay #2 back, at
least partially.
I'm curious as to how much money we're talking about. Not that
it really matters, but the more it is, the more I see #1 as
really being ungrateful!

Before deciding, I would like to understand the reason that #2
subsidized the trip.

I agree with this.
If Person #1 doesn't see that this is as a good opportunity for
her to repay Person #2's kindness and generosity, she is being
short-sighted.
Because in the future, I think it's likely that Person#2 will
find other beneficiaries for her generosity.
Natural consequences.

Update to address a few questions:
- Person #1 is a minor (teen). Person #1 could not have taken
advantage of the postponement and subsequent payment without
Person #2 also taking the postponement.
- Person #2 financed Person #1's trip because Person #1 is their
child.
- This was a gift, not a loan. It was actually billed as a
fundraising match dollar for dollar, if we're specific.

I think the teen is out of line for attempting to profit here.
Imagine if the teen actually worked out how much she owes her
mom for all the mom has provided for her over the years
