Comparing someone to a mentally handicapped character in a movie
is going to be seen as an insult, no matter what your intentions
are.

I've been called Rainman as well, in a sarcastic way, but I
don't think that your friend was being intentionally insulting.
I've also been called and have called my friends much more
blistering and offensive-on-their-face things, but I know my
audience. Your friend probably just doesn't understand that you
don't appreciate that sort of thing, and a gentle notification
the next time it happens would probably help.

I have been trying to articulate why this rubs me the wrong way
and I think it is the blanket assertion that comparisons to
mentally handicapped people are insulting. I think such
comparisons CAN be insulting, but this specific character was
actually noteworthy because of his gifts, not because of his
handicaps. I am not really able to fully articulate why the
quoted bothers me, but this is a start.

I'd be likely to raise an eyebrow and add "Well, I'm also an
excellent driver" and leave it at that.

If the person calls you Rainman again, just say "What do you
mean by that?" and then tilt your head to the side and look
inquisitive.

But he kind of already did that. He said ""Oh you sound like
'RainMan' and give out useless information". Apparently he felt
that (on that occasion at least) she had given out 'useless'
information.
I think your suggestion is a good one, but what I'm saying is
that maybe she can be prepared with a response in case he says
something similar to what he said last time. She's kind of
walking into it with more of a heads up this time.
