Tipping question: movers
DIR By: Dr. F.

For those that have followed my housing tales of woe from the
beginning, I'm happy to say that the end (at least for now!) is
in sight.
So, next question. I hired some movers to move just the heavy
furniture (bedroom, sofa, dining table, chairs, insanely huge
walnut cabinet, etc.). I'm moving everything else myself.
My question is: should I tip the guys who move the furniture? If
so, how much? Any suggestions?

I haven't tipped movers but I do provide cold (or hot, depending
on climate) drinks and if the moving ends up over a meal, I grab
pizza or subs for them.

Last time I moved I tipped $200 for the three movers to split.
That was moving from a one bedroom apartment to a house and did
not include an insanely huge cabinet, but did include all the
boxes. I don't know if a tip is required or expected, but I did
feel the service deserved it.

I would not tip movers. They set their price.

It depends on what type of movers are you using. I have had
three different types of movers.
I have used what I think of as independent movers for small
jobs, these guys own their own business, set their own prices
and I have always paid them directly (cash or check) when the
job is done. I do not tip this kind of mover.
I have also had corporate movers, these are large multi-state or
even international moving companies that I or the company I work
for hired for large moves, the people actually moving stuff are
hourly wage earners and I have always tipped them. I usually
figure $10-$20 per hour per person.
The third type of mover I used recently for a large but short
move, I got them through Uhaul but they were a semi-independent
group. I think there was an owner but they were local and he
hired guys to load and unload trucks. I was really unsure what
to do but had cash on hand. In the end the two guys did a great
job much quicker than expected so I gave each guy $40 and wrote
them a good review.
I would have some cash on hand so you can tip if it feels right
in the moment.

MOM ... "I would not tip movers. They set their price.".
For large established moving companies or large businesses, the
employees may be paid basically minimum wage.
This may not apply to a two or three man man operation however,
where they are the company.
So, to say, don't tip movers because they set their own prices,
may, in some cases, be not true.

I did tip my movers (from a corporate business that I hired.)
They did an excellent job and I believe that I got the prices
from the old site. In my mind, it was like $20 per guy (there
were three), but that seems cheap compared to what others are
suggesting here. (Maybe I did $40???)

This is where I land on this topic. Our last move was done by a
large company (paid for by DH's employer). It was a different
crew that loaded the stuff out of the old place and into the
truck than it was unloading the truck into our new place.
Largely because we moved to a different state.
They work for a company that provides workers to many moving and
delivery companies. While Moving Company A doesn't have enough
business in the area to employ their own crew, Moving Companies
A-Z have enough business to allow the worker's company to employ
a couple of crews full-time.
I tipped my crew $20 each at lunch time and let them know the
diner 1/2 mile away had decent food.

This is a good point; all the movers I've ever used were
independents.

So my providing drinks and lunch is pretty much equivalent.

Well, I understand what you are saying. However, the one time I
considered using a moving company, it was a small company and
the guy gave me some ridiculous quote and said "plus tip" lol.
No thanks.
And for the record, you can tip whomever and whenever you want.
I would not tip a mover.
