It all sounds wonderful. And I totally understand about renting
all the space and to not have your party influenced by the
timeline of other guests.
I only had one other question, but I think your last post sort
of covers that for me... Is the owner of the B&B ok with all
these guest milling about and eating dinner in parlors, sitting
rooms and such? I know I've seen some B&Bs that have a lean
towards Victorian, and not only do the settees look less than
comfortable, but I wouldn't want to feel responsible for any
damage to antique furniture that my guests could potentially
cause.
Bacon wrapped dates are fabulous... we have a ladies tea for
about 6 guests the first Sunday in December for a couple of our
neighbors. I always end up making 4-5 dozen of these for that
few people... they love them and tell me every year how the look
forward to them. Now I need to look up poor man's cake.

Yes, it's common for this B&B to have parties of this type there
and it's really set up perfectly for it. It's a Spanish style
home with modern furniture and décor and quarry tile floors, so
no stuffy Victorian furniture or super fragile things.
I think the bacon wrapped dates are a definite on the list now.
We also decided we will make the meatballs ourselves, because we
are meatball snobs. ;D We will keep them small so they are not
unwieldy. No one likes an unwieldy meatball.
Any other good appetizers

Since you are going with a primarily Italian meal, what about
Caprese skewers ( bocconcini, grape tomato, basil leaf)
Arancini ( rice ball, made from risotto ,stuffed with cheese,
ham or plain)
Toasted ravioli
Mediterranean deviled eggs ( filling made with Italian herbs,
chopped olives, or capers)
instead of any type of regular crudite, just a couple like
cherry tomatoes or snow peas(or sugar snap peas) stuffed with an
herbed goat cheese/ cream cheese spread
crudite (radicchio wedges, endive, carrots, pepper strips) with
bagna cauda ( a warm garlic butter anchovie dip)
thick slices or spears of zuchini breaded and fried

I’ve always followed Joan Crawford’s advice in her book My Way
of Life. She always added a splash of vodka to EVERYTHING. No
one ever knew, and everyone always had a lovely time. I’ve
certainly found it to be true!
I don’t know what poor man’s cake is, but it sounds terribly
depressing. Have you considered Baked Alaska?
I’m also not crazy about ethnic foods. Perhaps a tried and true
classic like Chicken a la King or Steak Diane?

I finally looked up poor man's cake. Looks like a common theme
in the recipes are brown sugar, raisins, and cinnamon. I guess
it's called that because it's made without white sugar, milk and
eggs which were rationed back in the day? ??? Maybe I'll try one
of the online recipe for our office holiday potluck. The
pictures look good.

My great aunt used to make Poor Man's cake bars. Here's a recipe
if your interested in that versus cupcakes.

Oh, dear, Uncle Rupert - Pasta and meatballs is "ethnic food?"
Can I have a ride in your time machine? I look really good in
1950's clothes, I could pass for a local.

This is awesome!!! Thank you! I’m going to make these for him on
his actual birthday this year. Now we just decided to have
regular cupcakes for the party.

Yes, exactly! First time I tried it I used a recipe from the
internet which was missing baking powder! It mentions it in the
instructions but not in the ingredients list, It came out like
a cracker.
But it really is delicious. I use cloves, nutmeg and allspice in
addition to the cinnamon.
