in showers for people I barely know, or don't know at all. To me
that is the ultimate gift-grab. And if it's another coworker
organising it, they should not be shocked when people choose not
       to participate.

At the work showers I've been to, there is often a collection
for a single gift, and people who only work with the person will
put in $5, or $0, and some people put in more.
The only people who bring a gift under their own name are the
people who work closely with them.
But generally everyone in the department attends.

Unless money is tight, I'd buy a token gift. I've gotten cute
stuff at Target type stores for around $5.00-10.00. It can be as
simple as a little hat or socks. A ducky bath thermometer was a
       big hit.

Thanks all. I will purchase a small something. The theme is
lumberjack. I went to order the cake today, which I saw online
and guess what??? they don't make that cake anymore. So I have
a new plan. I will get a plain cake with Welcome Baby name on
it and I purchased lumberjack very small rubber ducky's on
amazon and will wash and put on the cake.
I appreciate the ideas and feedback.

       I agree.
And I would also say that in your situation, I personally would
       be cheerful about both.
I might not bring an expensive present, but it also doesn't
sound like they're expecting expensive things.
And I'd think of it as a way to make myself more of a person to
the people around me. I'd probably include a note with the
present, and I might put a little more personalized effort into
it. (Like, I might look for a really good dribble bib w/ a tiny
neck opening, and then give that w/ a note that says I really
liked this style when mine were little, or something.)
I would see it as a public-relations opportunity.
I also don't see it as a gift grab--I would see it as a way that
this workplace tries to keep some sense of community going.

Toots, I am not sure why you think I would not be cheerful?
What's not to be happy about a new baby? Anyway, I think I have
settled on diapers and a pack of onsies. My gosh amazon has
       some cute ones.

I wasn't reacting to you on that comment; I was reacting more to
       other people's reactions.
And also just stating what *I* would do.

Another gift option is a baby board book.

so I ordered a really cute cake, bought little lumberjack rubber
duckies to put on the cake and have my diapers ready. I even
sprung for a flannel shirt to wear!

I think you are extremely generous for a person you barely know.
Sounds like you made good fun choices. :)

I wanted to update you all on the shower.
I ended up with a cake, cheese and cracker tray that was on sale
when I went and picked up the cake. The food was spread out and
you just went and got food when you wanted it.
Anyway, when the mom to be arrived, someone brought her over to
meet me, I thought she was going to cry. She was holding 2 of
the rubber duckies and thanked me to the moon and back. So now
I know her and she knows me. This is her first baby and her and
her husband are so excited to welcome baby boy.
When I was leaving she opened her gifts. Mine was a simple pack
of diapers and I am sure she is thankful. I just may even buy a
       baby gift!
I do have a funny story. My dining room is full of boxes from
online orders. I do open everything to make sure I get my
stuff. Well, I took the diapers out of the box and laid them on
the table. A few days later DS, now 20, came to me dead serious
and said, are you and dad hiding something from me? Of course I
said no. He said, well I see these diapers sitting on the
table. I started laughing and told him they were for a baby
shower. Then he started laughing and said, NO! I was worried
you are dad needed diapers because it has 46 on it, is that the
size? lol. It was 46 diapers!
