       My older son

This is the child, who when he was in kindergarten, I was told
that he needed to be held back. Reasons being, he was behind the
other kids in class, was one of the youngest, needed time to
mature. This was the first I heard of him having difficulties,
and I was not happy. I said absolutely not, I will put him in
Sylvan Learning Center, first. His IEP told me that wouldn't
       work.
Fast forward almost 20 years later, if I had listened to them,
and not put him in Sylvan, he would not be where he is today. An
extremely motivated young man, who a year ago started with a big
company here as a Millwright, helping to open up new expansions.
He told us over the weekend that he will be moving to Ohio, to
manage a new facility that has yet to be built, and that the one
he is at now, he has been basically managing. I could not be
       more proud of his accomplishments.

You should be proud! I’m very happy for him and wish you all the
       best.

I'd be so proud, too! Well done-- to your son for rising up, and
to you for making it possible.
I've been wondering ever since kindergarten whether my 2nd son
should have waited until he was 6 to start kindergarten-- his
birthday put him on the borderline. He seemed academically fine,
but immature. I'm finally starting to get a glimmer of hope this
year that he's in the right place. He still has some growing up
to do... but we're making progress.
It is encouraging to hear success stories like yours, to
remember that we can come out the other end in a good place!

I've read that sometimes kids growing up in poverty [NOT saying
that of your family] suffer more from "poverty of aspiration"
       than the actual poverty itself...
It sounds like his teachers subscribed to that self-perpetuating
       model: expect badly/less of a child/yourself, and it's pretty
       much a self-fulfilling prophesy.
I'm so glad to hear he's such a rampant success - maybe he could
give one of those talks at his old school? ;)

As weird as this sounds, he is a pretty shy, and talking in
front of a group of people would not go over well.
He is also a volunteer firemen, and when he was 18, was Firemen
of the Year, for his dept. I thought that was pretty spectacular
       for an 18 y/o.

Being Fireman of the Year is really impressive!
I'm glad he outdid his teachers' expectations; he sounds
       wonderful.
