I would recommend contacting Amazon and detailing your issues.
They have very good customer service and are very prompt.
Additionally, they are enormous and have a lot of sway with the
post office. They may be able to help you out.
I know that Canada Post is only surviving because of online
package delivery and I assume that USPS is the same. Amazon may
be your answer here.

I feel like I need to give the Post Office a chance to deliver
today. If they don't, I'll contact Amazon. Sigh. Fingers
crossed.

I'm with QueenFaninCA. I had a *piano* delivered by mail.
Granted, it was an electric piano, but it was 2 big packages. I
saw the mailman's face fall when I answered the door, because
that meant he had to go back to the truck and get the boxes, and
I lived on the 2nd floor at the time. Poor guy was probably
hoping that he could leave a note and I could pick them up at
the post office later. At the time, I lived in an apartment
with no front porch to leave it on.

I simply fail to see how a package can be small enough for the
post office or a parcel company to handle, but too big for them
to deliver. That just does not compute in any way.
I can totally understand them saying "Sorry, we don't handle
anything the size of a piano - suggest you hire a van or a
removals company"; but if they accept a piano for carriage, by
definition they must be capable of delivering it to the address
stated, otherwise they are in breach of their contract.

I live in Canada too, and yes it's quite different here now
since there is no true home delivery in most places . We get
mail delivered to community boxes in most places, even in the
cities, so while you don't have to go far, you do have to leave
your house and go out to a box. The boxes they have for package
delivery are only so big - anything bigger, yeah, you have to
pick up at the post office. Luckily for me, my post office is
across the road from the boxes! (I live in a rural area and the
post office is in a store.)

It sounds like you have a very lazy mail carrier. We get
packages all the time from the USPS. If they don't fit in the
mailbox, and most of them don't, they bring it and leave it on
our front door step. Their reasoning does not make any sense to
me. Why put it on the truck if they know they won't deliver it?
They obviously know the size of the mail box, and when you have
a large box, or even a small one, they know it won't fit in the
mail box. This does not come as a surprise to them. The
carrier doesn't drive up to the mail box and then look at the
package and try to stuff it in the mail box and then say "gee,
it doesn't fit"

Agreed, but... Amazon selected the carrier. If the USPS is not
going to be delivering packages to my door, then that makes
Amazon less useful. Prior to simply canceling my Prime account,
I might notify Amazon (maybe they can switch my packages to be
delivered by a company that will get them to my door.) But
either way, I would not pay for a service that was no longer
useful to me... even if it was not entirely their fault.
Slightly off topic: I just had a package delivered from Amazon
(the slow, free shipping, as I am actually not a Prime member.)
When it finally shipped, I noted that the tracking information
was not one of the typical carriers (USPS, UPS, FedEx...), but
rather Amazon's own shipping company?!? On the day of the
delivery, a white unmarked van pulled up to my house and dropped
the package at the door. I could not see the man's shirt for
identification, so maybe he was still with a third party
carrier, but this all made me wonder if Amazon was moving
towards having their own shipping company to avoid the various
issues?
