Oooh! I'd love one of those - we're so often comparing bolts
with stock at the hardware/DIY store; it would be brilliant to
know at least the diameter before we start the whole frustrating
process of finding replacements.

I went to Home Depot to buy a replacement screw, and I brought
one of the originals with me. (We weren't at home, so I didn't
have my own version of this; I have 2, one w/ the drill, and one
w/ the fasteners, and they are the handiest things!)
The guy who answered when I said, "Is either of you two a
fastening whiz?" kept sort of eyeballing things, and I had to
ask him FOUR TIMES, "Do you have one of those gauges that tell
us what size the screws and bolts are?" It was only when I got
kind of testy that he said, "Oh, yes, we could use this one,"
and picked it up from 4 inches away from him.
Then he set the screw in the biggest hole and said, "You need
1/4 inch." I could see that the screw was rattling around in the
hole--even the THREADS weren't touching the sides, so I asked
him to give it to me. And indeed, he was 2 sizes too big.
Thank God *I* knew what I was doing!
I don't know where I got mine; I think one was a hand-me-down
from my FIL, and the other may have come from my dad, or else I
saw it in a hardware store very early on and picked it up.

Lip balm is a good one: many people use it and keep it in
multiple places around their house (and maybe office).
I got a small tape measure at a graphic design trade show, and
it's perfect to keep in my bag for measuring emergencies (which
do occur for graphic designers, LOL).
I like the tote bags that stuff into a tiny pocket. Great for at
the show if I end up with too much stuff but easy to stash in a
pocket or purse if I don't need it.

Not just for graphic designers! ;) ;D
I'm pretty sure many of the people who post in Current Projects
have a small tape secreted about their person/bag a lot of the
time.

If I am wearing a lanyard, I tuck it inside my blouse or shirt
so it doesn’t swing around. I have the larger phone now, so I
can’t tuck it under my bra strap.

I always carry a tape measure; I whip it out and help others at
the thrift stores I shop at. People are amazed at how prepared I
am. I'm amazed at the fact that they aren't.

I bought one that rolls up (on a spring) into a small pill box
sized pink plastic case. Everyone wants to "borrow" it...yeah,
right, been told that before & lost the pen - more than once.
