       Pens, pens and more pens
Other things I like are tournaquets and tape measures but I
accept they are profession specific, but in general just give me
the pens, I have several of the mirrors I don't use them - give
       me the pens!

oh I also liked the memory cards which were also bracelets -
admittedly I wiped the stuff on them and gave them to the kids
for their homework, but I do like them and they still have a
       logo

I went to a convention for the Angel Collectors of America Club
(ACCA) where they gave us a really nice big bag as part of the
       swag.
When I was at the airport a young woman came into the area I was
in with her stuff just coming out of her suitcase, in every
direction! I emptied my bag into my backpack and went over to
her and offered it to her. She was so grateful and said that I
       was an angel to her.
I now always carry a large bag, folded up, so I will be able to
help the next time. (Also, they are good if you end up buying
too much.) So, I'd like one of those bags that folds into a
little pouch that is sewn on the side or into a pocket sewn on
       it.

Thinking back over the last 30 years, the things I have kept
       are:
       - good quality pens [yes, the fatter ones are more attractive to
me; a blodgy, ink-smearing one makes me think less of your
       business!]
       - small tins of tiny mints - the tins are great (once empty) for
       pills/earplugs/vaseline
       - notepads/sticky notes
       - USB thumb drives; like a PP said, you can't put much on them,
but they are great for showing a few photos, and if the viewer
keeps them I'm not out a 16Gb card
       - good quality tote bags - like the pens, if you give me
rubbish, I'm going to assume your company doesn't care about
       quality/its image
       - leather credit card wallets - I still have two, even though I
came to loathe BT because of its appalling customer service, and
I have never visited Devonshire Terrace
The worst freebie I can remember? Really poor quality chocolate
[in really nice quality wrapping] from a softs trading house!
Not that I'm likely to trade with them, but it seemed so very
       badly misjudged. :-\
So I think my theme is: I'd rather be given nothing than given
rubbish, if you want me to associate your company with any
       quality attributes.

Some of my own company's swag that I kept were a little manicure
kit and a pedometer. Many of my coworkers like knitted arm
warmers; the office can get cold. Nice quality coasters are also
nice to protect desks from iced or got drinks.
I really like umbrellas but they're too expensive for general
       bulk swag.
My company's kitchen has quite a collection of mugs from other
companies. So while individuals might not keep mugs, they can be
handy for communal use since we're trying to reduce waste and
       cost of paper cups.

What about the fans that, before AC became common, were
distributed to churches by funeral homes?

The fans are wonderful and appropriate. I grab one whenever I
can because we used to camp a lot . Fans don’t make me think
that the funeral home is filthy and pest ridden and wonder
what’s going on in the prep area and how the loved one was
treated. At least it gave us a lot of fodder for jokes on the
       way home.

How could I forget the umbrellas?! I've got a few of those...

What an odd choice. Especially for a funeral home.
       Implications run rampant! :D
I guess it could have been worse though. A shovel perhaps?
