If a non-handicapped space is available closest to where you
need to go and that is the easiest spot for you? Use it,
regardless of how many handicapped spots are available. You
need to look after you when you are having a bad day. I agree
with Toots that it might be more generous to leave a regular
spot available when there are a lot of handicapped spots
available but I don't think it is a matter of being polite.
I've been to many parking lots where the handicapped spots
really aren't all that convenient; they are positioned where
there is a curb cut-out for wheelchairs and walkers. It is much
easier to park in a regular spot nearer the door and deal with
the curb, as the distance needed to be walked is the issue.

We use our handicapped placards if we are having a bad day. As
you do. The placard is not visible if we are not using it.
The reasons I don’t think it is rude to park in a normal spot is
that the the person who is registered for that tag must be
getting in or out of the car for it to be valid. Also, if my
friend's son uses her car, which has a permanent handicapped
license plate, it is illegal ($250 fine) for him to park in the
reserved spot because he is not the name on the registration.

Yes, this sounds right. I wouldn't consider you rude, but, if
there are 20 empty handicapped spots, the regular spots are
filled up to half the parking lot away (and shall we throw in
"it's raining" just to exaggerate the point?) I would think it
is more thoughtful to use one of those 20 empty spots.
I absolutely DO NOT think you're being rude though. My sister
has a handicapped parking placard because of some foot problems.
She does the same thing as you. She feels that she's not
justified in using one of those spots when there are plenty
others available. She's trying to be fair and considerate and so
are you! :)
