Rude Consignment Store chick!

There is a delightful little local consignment shop I go to on a
regular basis and each time, I spend $100+. So, I think I'm a
fairly good customer.
It's one of those shops where there are different booth areas
arranged by individual sellers, but you pick up whatever you are
getting and take it to the front to pay. Some of the booths are
contained in their own little room.
Today, I entered a booth like that that had a paper sign taped
to the entrance that said in large letters "15% OFF Entire
Booth" with the Vendor number underneath.
I found something I liked and decided that with the 15% it was
what I was comfortable with paying.
I took it to the front and casually reminded them that the
seller had discounted everything in the booth 15%. The woman
who was helping me asked the other woman "George had his booth
on sale for just Saturday and Sunday, right?" The other woman
replied "I think so."
She said to me "It was only supposed to be Saturday and Sunday."
I said "Excuse me" and went off to take a picture of the sign.
Nowhere on the sign did it specify a time limit.
I pulled the sign off the wall (after taking a picture) and
brought it back to the front.
So, then she says to me "You know, the store has to pay the
difference."
I was a little surprised that she would be so passive aggressive
and I said "Well, wouldn't it be the seller's responsibility to
take his sign down after the sale?"
And she said "Well, he lives an hour away." Then, she paused
and actually admitted "We run the sale for him."
So, then she continues futzing around with the cash register
ringing me up and when the total pops up, she says "Well, and it
cost the store $20!"
Um, ok?
I said nothing.
Usually, I want to be accommodating to others, but in this
instance, I was really just shocked.
It's not like this place is that busy during the day. And if it
was their job to run the sale, they should have dated the sign
or removed the sign. I was there within an hour of them
closing, so it had been that way all day.
But, to passively aggressively try to make me feel bad that I
was getting a $20 discount (actually a little less than $20)
leaves a very bad taste in my mouth.
I've read a few reviews for the place where people reported that
kind of rudeness but I had never encountered it before.
I figure I did the right thing by just keeping my mouth shut!
But, seriously, who does that?!!

I suppose the other thing you could do is to say, "oh, well, I
don't want it then. I'll let you put it back in his shop."
Let them lose a sale. Would that lost sale be more than $20?

Yes, she was rude. Just curious, was this for a
nonprofit/charitable organization? Like for a hospital, kids, or
fundraising for a cure? If so, maybe her dedication to the cause
got the better for her (but still rude).

If she didn't want to honor the sign, she could have said, "I
can't sell it to you for that discount; I'm very sorry." It
would be OK, I think, to refuse to honor an error (supermarkets
often put that line in their ads, or have that on a sign at the
front).
But it's rude to just snark that you should voluntarily pay more
than you had decided you wanted to pay.

I’ve been in consignment stores when they called the booth owner
to see if they wanted to honor a discount or accept an offer. I
think that’s how they should have handled it. I don’t understand
what difference it makes and suspect the owner would have been
glad to honor the sale price and not ding the store for
forgetting to remove the sign.

Very, very rude. And I agree with the other poster who said they
probably would’ve just not purchase the item. There was no call
for her to act like that. If they had an issue with honoring the
discount, they should’ve either called the booth owner or
honored to the discount and taken it up with the booth owner at
another time.
I frequent some antique stores that are set up like that. I
Purchased a larger piece of furniture out one where they caught
the booth owner to see if it would be OK for them to except a
check instead of a credit card. I completely understood and was
happy to comply. But they were very polite about it.

Yes, rude and poor way to run a business. Over the years I've
watched restaurants and stores with good products ruin
themselves with poor customer service.

In my head, I think "valuable learning experience: it only cost
your company $20 for on-the-job training - companies pay a
fortune for that sort of thing", but depending on how snarky the
tone I might say, "oh what a shame you left the sign there then,
isn't it?" with a smile.
When people haven't honoured the advertised/posted price, I
always politely say "oh, I don't want it at that price; I'll let
you put it back when you alter/remove the wrong pricing label".
If I can't have something at the price shown, I'm not going to
restock the shelves!

You handled it just right. I would have been tempted to be
snarky but yeah, best thing to do is just keep your mouth shut
and let them do all the whining.
To answer your question, "But, seriously, who does that?!!"
surprisingly lots of people. I've had clerks of all kinds be
rude to me over the years over some petty stuff like a 50 cent
coupon. On the other hand, some people bend over backwards to go
the extra mile.
I wonder if the woman was the owner of the store. If not, then
really, the money wasn't coming out of her pocket! But if so,
then she is cutting off her nose to spite her face by angering a
good customer over a small amount like $20.
If $20 is going to make or break their bottom line for the day,
the store isn't going to be in business much longer anyway.

I would turn your OP into a yelp review. I would like to know
what kind of behavior to expect when I shop.
The clerk had no reason to complain. The sign didn't say
anything about a weekend sale. Just as an aside, if you are in
the US, Monday would have been considered part of the holiday
weekend. That would have made a sale seem even more likely to
me. If the store had something to lose from the sale, they
shouldn't have offered it.
I just reread your OP and noticed that others had left this type
of complaint before. I would still add the yelp review. If it is
a store that you really like, you should contact the owner. I
wouldn't like to deal with that kind of attitude, and I don't
want to be bullied into paying more for something that is on
sale. For all I know, the clerk is charge full price for sale
items and putting the money in her own pocket.
