husband brought you back some great dessert.

No. He brought me a chunk of turkey, but um, it was in with the
gluten stuffing :/ I almost ordered skip the dishes yesterday
but was sure my hubby would bring me a nice plate. :(

Thankfully, neither my father, my husband and brother in laws,

       gatherings a long time ago.

VorGuy and I have been married over 42 years.
He still "forgets" how to set up my hamburger when ordering. I
haven't gotten his wrong in about forty-two years (seriously -
it's the default set up for almost all hamburger places). We
stopped at a hamburger joint on a three day drive last week and
he ordered two burgers for us to eat in the car. The only good
news is that that place defaults to mayo instead of mustard - so
I was able to pick off the onions & pickles (they didn't touch
the bread, so no pickle juice soaked into anything) and eat it.
He got the extra onions & pickles that he loves - but usually he
would gripe about being handed a burger with mayo. He ate it -
while grousing about not remembering that the place had such a
weird default..and I observed (purely to myself) that karma
really will "get you". While enjoying my burger without having
to scrape off mustard in the car with a napkin - as there were
no plastic utensils in the car with us.
He remains astonished that I can remember trivial little things
like what someone's favorite hamburger will have on it - and I
remain astonished that he can't remember what someone's favorite
hamburger will have on it. Apparently his mother has the same
issue - as she will argue with someone as to what their favorite
meal is - when she's mixed up two of her kids' favorites or two
of the grandkids. I found out this year that his father prefers
mayo on his burgers, too, which leaves me astonished as to why
she always remembered to put out the mustard & catsup at a
cookout, but almost never remembered to put out the mayo....but
a husband has no qualms about going into his own refrigerator
where a guest might ask permission first.

DH and I usually have about 25 people for Thanksgiving (I
mentioned elsewhere that this is my favorite holiday), and we do
a pot luck. At least 2-3 of our guests each year are
vegetarians (Including my son and sweet SIL), so we ask that
everyone bring a vegetarian side dish, appetizer or dessert.
Each year I prepare turkey, gravy, veggie gravy, and vegetarian
stuffing. My lovely MIL (who lives with us) makes cranberry
relish, cheese spread and rosemary olives. We usually know in
advance with other foods are going to be brought, and we can ask
people not to bring X if someone is already bringing it. This
has worked really well for us for decades. There are enough
choices so that people with dietary restrictions can always find
plenty to eat, and the vegetarians don't have to worry about
bacon bits in the green beans.

It's one thing to always be forgetful, but if I were the OP, I'd
be pretty steamed to receive all these instructions and veto's
when it comes to my cooking due to SIL's preferences, but
doesn't pay attention to what's placed on his own wife's plate.

I would, too, but I'd also wonder if whoever fixed the plate for
him either just didn't know/care about the wrong stuffing or if
he just asked for a "plate" and didn't think about the GF issue
until his wife asked if it was safe to eat...
I have been known to be quite vocal about mustard, onions, and
pickles on my burgers as well as a few other things. He is
slightly more likely to remember "allergies" - but his family
had a different attitude about personal preferences being
something that just happens instead of the person just being a
picky eater who should "get over it" and eat what was in front
of them, whether they liked it that much or not. He can eat
things that I can't stand the taste of - so it might be genetic
       - their family just doesn't have the same "tastes" or isn't
perceiving some of the same nuances of flavor or smell that my
family did. Or the difference in where his ancestors came from
       - different family recipes.
Either way, I eat what I can and remind him about customizing my
burger before I head to the bathroom when we're on a car trip.
It's not a deal breaker - but it is getting a lot more annoying
than I ever realized it might be back when I was forty-odd years
younger and we were dating...and he remembered to ASK every
       time.

My late MIL had many faults (don't we all!), but she determined
that her sons would know how to cook and clean. DH jokes that
she wanted them to know so she wouldn't have to do it herself,
but I'm grateful. He enjoys cooking and loves to watch cooking
shows, and he's better at making silky-smooth gravy and sauces
than I am. I travel a lot for work, and he's perfectly capable
of whipping up meals for himself or to have waiting when I get
       home.

I know that this recipe may sound a bit strange, but it really
       is yummy.
Take 1 or 2 large bags of frozen green beans, and one canister
of frozen orange juice concentrate. Do NOT add water to the
concentrate. Put the green beans and orange juice together, in
either a crockpot for 3 hours, or on the stovetop and simmer for
       3 hours.
I was hesitant at first, but it was really delicious.
