A hypothetical situation came to mind: Let's say you're eating
alone at a restaurant. A former acquaintance (known for being
gossipy & judgmental) walks by and exclaims "Oh, hello! So
lovely to see you! Haven't seen you in a long time. Mind if I
join you for lunch / sit with you for a bit ?" If you don't want
that person to sit with you, what would be a polite way to turn
down that request ?

I like the previous two replies! I wish I'd had them as a young
adult.
I worked in a mall and would take lunch in the food court and,
while I'm pretty extroverted, sometimes I just wanted to
decompress and not chat with people. I also didn't like all the
older men who wanted to stop and try to get me to "smile" or
engage with them. I got in front of it by always having reading
material. I ended up training myself into always reading when I
eat alone now. Prior to that job, I'd eat mindfully.
