Please update us on how that is working, because I could use a

I started out that way, years ago. The only way to keep that
resolution is to avoid fabric shops until you have finished the
project in hand. And avoid looking at the magazines and books.
I now have quilting friends that are jealous of my scraps even,
because they got into quilting really late in their lives! I
even give my garbage bits to people (pieces that are from 1 inch
to about 2 .5 inches wide, and would otherwise truly go into the
garbage) because they don't have enough scrappy bits to do
things like "string" quilts, which I have done enough of and
don't want to do any more. Now my garbage consists of only bits
that are really too small to work with, and that makes me feel
better! Mostly now I only buy staples, like white or black, or
really fun fabric like glow in the dark! I will never use all
       that I have.

My Christmas fabrics are now all together. I posted in "Current
       Projects" about how that happened!
Modified to add: All the pieces less than a yard are in one
crate. The bigger pieces are sorted by color and fill two crates
       and overflow into another crate.
I just remembered another place that I have fabric stashed. So
another closet to empty! This is causing me to rethink my buying
patterns. Sigh. Better late than never.

As I go looking for fabrics in my stash, I have been pulling the
ones that make me think, "What was I thinking?!" I'm putting
them aside for my mother who is thrilled to be getting them. She
makes several quilts a month, so she is using up all of her
fabric! (Role model, but only recently...she is why I have so
much fabric in the first place!)
But today I refused to go into a Joann's fabric store. (This is
a major win for me!) I have coupons for fabric, but that isn't
what I need. I'm waiting for a 60% off of anything, so I can go
buy a 10 pound box of fiberfill. I went through a 5 lb. box like
it was nothing, so I'm going to get the bigger box this time.
Over a hundred ornaments and a bunch of pillows uses a lot of
       fiberfill!

Depending on what you are making, even ugly fabric can look good
if it's cut small enough! I have used a lot in quilts that call
       for small squares.
And good on you for passing up the sale! I have had to do that
       too - there's a store that twice a year has a graduated sale -
30% one day on up to 50% the last day. I have refused to go at
least the last two times. Fat lot of good that did me when I
wound up buying stuff from Connecting Threads on line!

I bought one rust colored paisley fabric that I wasn't wild
about. I ended up digging scraps out of the trash to finish
putting together a coordinated sewing & embroidery basket for my
mother to use with her petit point supplies & frame when
traveling. It was a one handled fruit basket for "country chic"
in the eighties that I made a liner, a lid, a scissor case, and
a needle case for - then made a second one for myself. I had to
go buy different fabrics as the rust colored paisley was
gone...completely. I still have my liner, lid, & accessories -
but the basket broke up long ago. Mom still has hers - she did
finish the seats for her dining room chairs, so it has smaller
projects stored in it, the last time I saw it.
I made a smaller portfolio with scissors case, needle book (wool
felt leaves), and the like to carry counted cross stitch
projects in - I noticed earlier this month that the plastic grid
used to reinforce it is breaking and the quilt fabrics are
wearing out on corners and edges. I may have to break down and
figure out how I originally did it so that I can either repair
it or make another to replace it...

I hate doing repairs with a passion! That said, I do sometimes
make them. Protesting the entire time!

There are a few times when making repairs will take less time &
effort...but this portfolio was made with counted cross stitch
panels in each piece AND the same fabrics. Trying to find the
same colors more than 26 years later is going to be hopeless.
But I'm not quite ready to take out just the embroidered panels
and recreate the set of sewing stuff in all new fabric. It
might be simpler to find a coordinating fabric to add some
random looking patchwork blocks that just happen to cover the
       worn out spots...
I'm just not looking forward to it.
But I'm not getting rid of the embroidered panels either...

I went into Hobby Lobby to get a fabric that I know I already
bought, but can not find. I walked out with a ton of fabric,
because they had put a huge amount of fabric into a clearance
sale. So, all of my staying out of fabric stores was blown in
one sale. However, it was blown on $3.00 and $2.00 a yard, not
$6.00 and $7.00 a yard. Already have it in the washing machine.
Need to get back to sewing every night.
