How do you organize your fabric?
By: gmatoy Date: September 29, 2018, 5:22 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
I am looking at the fabric I bought today and am wondering, "If
I knew where everything was, would I have been able to use
       fabric I already own?"
I'm think of taking a few days (weeks) to organize by ...See,
that's it. I don't know how to organize it. I already have most
of my Christmas together. Same with Peanuts, Halloween, and
Patriotic fabrics. Everything else is shoved into crates. Would
it be worth while to sort it by colors? Help!!
       Thank you.

Ugh! The crafter's perennial question! ;D
I have sections of "like" fabrics - cowboy, Aunt Gracie's, cats,
etc, where I have a great pile of those fabrics. The rest of it
is mostly sorted by colours, but there's one section that is
just "feature" fabric, mostly kid stuff. Equally important is
what do you do with the scraps. I started scrap management a few
years ago. I now cut the left over fabric from projects into the
largest pieces I can, first big strips, then down to 2" squares,
and I have bins or little drawers for all of these. Makes doing
a scrappy quilt so much easier.

I used to work in an Interior Design Studio and was in charge of
       the fabric memo samples.
They were stored in bins by colours.
       Except
Checks, sheers, and stripes had their own bins.
When certain fabrics were popular they had their own bins:
velvet, linen, leather. This could be 2" scraps, knits,
       batiks..........

I was at my sister's house today - her "fabric stash" is quite
small - courtesy of a lot of help & encouragement from a husband
who is helping her clear out her excess clutter.
Oddly enough, his hobby stuff seems to take over at least part
of the storage space that has been cleared...
But she still has "too much stuff", apparently.
Me? I just thought about my walk in storage area upstairs and
decided I might pass a few duplicates on to her. Or make them
up for DD - the pattern came in the mail today!
But not until after I take a nap - Fall blew in with chill rains
and I'm getting sleepy early after it got dark early (thick
       cloud cover).

It's the same peril book people have, just with fabric. With
private book stashes you have to decide if you want to sorry by
author, genre, best loved, series, etc.
With fabrics, it's colors, type of material (velvet, vinyl,
burlap, linen, cotton, blended, etc), weight of material (like
is this a spring, summer, fall, or winter fabric?), themed
       print, holiday print, stripes/checkers/ginghams, etc.

Oh my goodness, I never even thought of other types of fabrics!
I quilt, so just have cotton.

I have the quilt fabrics (mostly) in one place, then folded &
sorted by color - except only the fat quarters fit there, so the
half yards & larger pieces are elsewhere.
Looking at the post-2012 avalanche closet, where some stuff was
just picked up and put back on the shelf...it may be time to
clean the closet out entirely and sort things out in a more
       logical manner...
If I can figure out what would be more logical?
Knits & wovens by weight is the most appealing right now - then
sort those six categories more or less by color.
Amazing how much solid black is in there, knits, silk matka,
linen, rayon challis, and more...no wonder I have two pairs of
"good" black slacks, two pairs of "good black Capris", and two
solid black one piece swimsuits (in two sizes) and two pair of
swimsuit bottoms with three or four print tankini tops (beach
works better with tankini - pool & gym, the suit stays in place
better with a one piece). And three black dresses plus a black
background on a print - two of the dresses have never been
worn....they don't "hang right" due to being ready-to-wear. And
       one black skirt..long & full - which I haven't worn lately...
Maybe I need to sort out a few of the things that I haven't worn
in two years, try them on, and see if they'd be more useful
going to the Salvation Army to go into someone else's
closet...after I get back the middle of October from our next
trip. VorGuy has discovered his "retirement hobby" - at least
this year, it's been planning a lot of trips.
I'm ready to spend less time on the road next year....I have all
       this fabric to sort now.

I loved reading everyone's answers. I think that I'm going to
leave it until we get cool weather, because lifting and moving
the crates is going to be a work-out. Then I'm going to keep
Christmas, Halloween, and Peanuts as separate categories. I'll
put all of the flannels together. the same with knits. I'll lay
everything else out, sort by predominant color and put back into
the bins using the rainbow. If I have a lot of one color (I'm
looking at you, pink and purple) I'll put the smaller pieces in
one crate and larger pieces in another crate.
I'm using the crates from Sterilite that Wal-Mart sells. They
stack pretty nicely, with the bottom of one on the top of the
one under it. I've got them stacked up 6 deep and must sew
faster as I can not stack any higher!
These crates are made to also lay on the side and fasten
together, but that would take space I don't have.
Thank you all for your ideas. I have a plan. I'll wait for cool
weather and a few days off.

I tend to sort my fabrics buy fabric content, such as linens,
linen blend, cottons, silks, brocades. Then I sort color within
       fiber content.
Of corse I do have my bins of “ducky-bunny” fabrics. For those
who don’t know what that is, it is cotton prints released for
Easter that usually has ducks and/or bunnies, and gets marked
incredibly cheap to get rid of it after the holiday. But it can
be used as “pattern” fabric, to make a more durable copy of a
tissue paper patterns. Also used to make a mock-up for fitting
purposes. (Yes, I mostly make clothing)

I used to do mostly clothing, but have moved into the gifts/
quilting section of the craft. Most of my family doesn't
want/need clothing made for them. The big exception is everyone
wants lounging pants! I make dozens every year!
