       cabbageweevil, glad to hear things went well, and that Ivan
       accepted the situation. To me, unless family members are really
       awful, you accept them.

       I would decide how close I am to my nephew's girlfriend and
       decide if I wanted to attend.
       The only choices are "I am sorry I cannot make that"
       or "I would be delighted to come"
       Saying "can't believe you are not paying for this" is not an
       option.

       Thanks !  I agree with your second sentence: "our lot" are a
       very long way from really awful.
       Ivan has started talking about a retaliatory invitation for them
       to come to a restaurant with us, with them all paying for their
       own meals; but I think he's joking...

       If he does, just remind him that, as mentioned previously, if he
       calls that an "invitation", he will be blatantly in the wrong!
