I think your response was ideal. A snarky response would have
implied hurt and defensiveness, but you showed her - and
everyone else who heard the exchange -that you're a bigger woman
than she is, in the best sense of the phrase. Props to you!

Aww, thanks, everyone! I was more astonished than hurt, because
most people at least wait until their target is out of the room
before they make catty comments. ;D But I admit that it did
sting a bit, so I appreciate all of your comments.

My hat is off to you! I wish I could be that classy.
I hope that after you left that her trainer had to explain that
that was not acceptable in their office. We can imagine that
that is what happened, right?

One of the two classic situations for that, actually. The other
classic would be if you sincerely wanted to bless their heart
because they are so kind and thoughtful or because you are.

irresistibly tempting to come back with a biting retort of some
kind. You handled it best by responding as though it were
actually a compliment.

Let me tell you, coming from a mouthy family, I would have
dropped "Sweetheart, I heard you just fine. You shouldn't throw
stones with your rear end at that desk every day & that half
empty bag of chocolates." This is why you can't let me loose too

I like TeamBhatka’s response. I’d have let her know with the
look in my eye and the smirk on my face that I heard her just
fine, all while telling her to have a nice day.
But I think your response was very classy, and I hope to grow
into that kind of person any day now.
