Been there, done that on the "but we don't have texting" train -
VorGuy finally had enough and we replaced our older phones with
smart phones with texting and a data plan two years ago the
middle of July. He's fairly happy about it now - but doesn't
seem to remember that he was the one who dragged his feet
because of how "expensive" it would be and that we really didn't
"need" it. Until he had the experience of getting a couple of
hours cut off a detour using someone else's smart phone when
I-10 was closed due to flooding in early 2016, we almost missed
meeting some people after a parade at a "once in a lifetime
event", and then after we got the phones, he had the experience
of me checking the stock market for him several times on the
road without him having to find a place to pull over where we
could sign onto the WiFi.
But he'll never be an "early adopter" of new tech...

That's unfortunate you didn't get a chance to connect.
I balked at getting a cell phone for ages, but now really
appreciate having one. My plan is just talk and text, no data
but certainly enough for my needs. Texting is so convenient when
making plans with people. It's nice to have things down in
"black and white" so one doesn't have to rely on memory for
dates, times and places! My biggest hurdle is remembering to
turn the phone on, and keep it charged. :)

You don't even have to give out your phone# to anyone you don't
want to. I hardly get any phone calls or text at all but when I
do, I know can be important. I'm not a person who likes chatter,
even in text form.
I get texts from the pharmacy at work and know to stop by after
work instead of going home and needing to go out again. If I get
separated from the people at the store or concert/whatever, I
can just call or text. If I'm lost, I can google directions or
call a friend to pick me up. Most important, I feel more secure
knowing my elderly mother can contact me anytime I'm away from
home or even work.
A lot of people think cell phones will take over their lives or
something like that, but mine actually gives me more freedom. I
can't imagine being without a cell phone anymore.
