You know, I don't know if I ever told you about the crazy woman
who used to shave her legs in her cube...
I thought the nail clipping and cooking fish in the microwave
she just was bad, but no, shaving was the worst thing I think
she did.

Personal phone calls which means listening to droning on all.
day. long.

OMG, SO much this! Back when dinosaurs roamed the earth, I
worked in a cube farm and one of my neighbors: 1) got pregnant;
2) got walked out on by her cheating husband when she was 8
months pregnant; and 3) went through a VERY messy divorce. I
had to listen to every single episode of this soap opera up
close and very. very. personal, all the way up to the
restraining order she slapped on the ex-husband!

To add to the smells: I used to have a bookkeeper that would
come in to the office once a month, she had a moist smell about
her. I’m not quite sure what it was, and it wasn’t strong at
first but as the day went by the office would fill up with it.
(She also gossiped about all the other managers she would review
the books for all day which I didn’t appreciate).
I had a board member who was a sighning officer who I would need
to come in to the office to sign documents. I ended up changing
the system so signing officers would no longer come in to my
office, I would leave the documents in a locked photocopy room
and email the officers to sign them on Friday afternoon when my
office is closed. (I’m still working but it’s closed)
I had to do this because this woman in question smelled as
though she had locked herself in a closet and smoked three packs
of cigarettes and then stayed in there absorbing the smoke. The
smell would last for hours if she visited my office for just 5
minutes.
I’ve known lots of smokers, I used to be a smoker, I’ve never
known anyone to smell so much like smoke.
She was pretty normal otherwise, I don’t know why she couldn’t
crack a window somewhere.

Our team of 4 sits in an office together with no barriers
between our desks. Each afternoon, we go for tea together and
bring the tea back to our desks.
One afternoon, my boss picks up his cup and slurps a bit as he
drinks. A few seconds later, I pick up my cup and deliberately
slurp. My co-worker gets what's going on and she picks up her
cup and slurps on purpose.
My boss picks up his cup and slurps even longer and louder. I
try to keep it going, but start laughing and can't properly
slurp. Our other co-worker just looks over at us, sighs, and
shakes her head a bit.
It was a good laugh for the afternoon.
My boss still slurps his tea.

We suffered through an invasion of itsy bitsy drain flies. They
were everywhere. You couldn't pick up a book or sort papers
without clouds of them raising up off desks.
Maintenance said we were obviously eating at our desks and that
was causing the problem. Nope. Everyone ate in the little
staff room. Maintenance said the problem would go away by
itself. Nope, the bugs persisted.
Finally, someone looked up "killing drain flies" on line. Next
thing we knew, little plastic bowls popped up in several places.
They were filled with apple cider vinegar and a little lemon
dishwashing liquid. The bowls were covered in saran wrap and
had a few holes poked through the top.
Bugs were attracted to the fruity smell, crawled in, couldn't
get out and drowned. We were having mass funerals daily. Then
someone else started pouring baking soda and vinegar down the
drains twice a day.
Bugs were gone in about two weeks. Maintenance was still having
trouble with them in their area, but refused to believe they
could make them go away with such old fashioned methods.

I complained about this on E-Hell :-).
In my previous job my work partner's desk was directly behind
mine with both of us facing forward. The left short ends of the
desks were against the wall and the right short ends were
completely open. There was maybe a foot of space between the
back of my chair and the front of her desk.
For some reason people absolutely insisted on squeezing
themselves in behind my chair in order to stand at the long end
of her desk and talk to her rather than standing at the short
end. I tried everything I could think of to block the
opening...boxes, a stepstool, a plant...it was a flippin' 5'
tall ficus tree...people either sidled around the item or
actually moved it out of the way so they could squeeze in behind
me. She'd point at the short end and say, "Come over here,"
every single time. I'd say, "Please don't stand behind me."
Nothing helped.
Finally I started scooting my chair backwards when someone was
standing behind me, thisclosetome. Bang! Oh I'm so sorry, I
had no idea you were standing there. Whomp! Oops, maybe you
should stand over there? Thud! This isn't really a good place
for you to stand.
It may not have helped much but I felt a little better.

Does it make me a horrible human being to say I would totally
enjoy doing this in the same situation?

Sigh...just got back to the office after a weeks' vacation, and
the guy at the next desk is already getting on my nerves....
