Cubes Open Office land - what breaches of etiquette have you see
n?

I thought to start a thread about what breaches of etiquette you
have seen when working in an open office set up and how you cope
with them.
This morning I came into work and found a colleague having a
conference call on speaker phone in a cube set up. Now - I don't
think she did this from any lack of normal etiquette - I think
she thought she would be alone until 9:00am and I came in at
8:30am, but it is frustrating since I will need to wait with any
heavy concentration work until she is done. I'm pretty sure when
her call is done she will apologize, since she is normally a
very polite and kind person.
What types truly etiquette type things have you seen in an open
office that won't lead to Professional Darwinism but are
something that we need to polish our polite spine to address?

Personal phone calls which means listening to droning on all.
day. long.
Humming all. day. long.

In my last few months at work the person with whom I shared a
cube drove me nuts. She would type furiously for about 15
minutes. Then, she would stop and crack every knuckle on every
finger of both hands...slowly and methodically. After that, she
would do the same thing in the opposite direction before another
15 minutes of furious typing. All day long.
Also, she would not say a word to me during the two months we
shared the space. I couldn’t even get a ‘good morning’ out of
her.

Personal phone calls were one way I learned what one cube
neighbour was truly like. Didn't matter what place she was
calling (e.g. arranging tickets for various things for
vacation), she was really nasty and demanding. I had always
suspected she wore a facade of niceness, and her calls confirmed
it. She's long gone (the clients she dealt with complained about
her too).

I once had a college who would smack her tongue and say “ahhhh”
after every single sip of coffee. She also wouldn’t “mmmm” at
least two or three times while eating, and she also smacked her
gum. I don’t understand the idea of “oral fixation” or if it is
a legitimate theory even if I did understand it, but it may
explain her actions.
I don’t smoke but I would be outside with her when she was
smoking sometimes and she would always would take a draw from
her smoke and then go “uhm” indicating she would be speaking
after the exhale.
So her mouth was always working or making noise or a combination
of both.

I had a cube mate who thought she was the next Whitney Houston
and would sing, loudly, to whatever music was playing over the
office stereo system.
At first it was:
"Hey, Coworker, I'm on a client phone call, could you stop
singing?"
"Oh, sorry, I just looooove this song."
Next it became:
"Coworker, please stop singing. We can't hear our phone
callers."
"Oh, yeah, sorry. I sometimes forget."
Then it became:
"Coworker, knock it off already!"
She got huffy and told our supervisor we were rude. When he
asked us we said, just watch her for a few hours. He did, she
sang, her told her to stop, she quit.

My cube neighbor is into essential oils. The smell is
overwhelming. I am not allergic nor do I get migraines from it.
It is just so unpleasant.

It's hard to say who was the most annoying...I've had the
pleasure of working with the following cube breachers:
The non-stop gospel music player/singer
The speaker phone person
The PEOPLE who refused to change the empty water cooler bottle
The PEOPLE who left rotten food in the communal refrigerator for
goodness knows how long
The lady who doused herself in some god-awful perfume
head-to-toe. Seriously, you could smell her a good 50 feet
before her physical body made it to you.
The popcorn burner. You know the one. The one who puts popcorn
in the microwave and wanders off...inevitably burning the crap
out of their popcorn and stinking up the whole office
This segues into the woman who always nuked salmon and other
stinky fish in the microwave, even after repeated requests from
EVERYONE not to
OHHHH, and the nutter who rearranged my desk and all my drawers
when I was on vacation. I.was.livid. Her reasoning? It was
backwards. No dear, it was set-up lefty. It was like that on
purpose. I am ambidextrous and my desk was an odd L-shape. I had
it set-up so I could use it easily. FTR, she was NOT using my
station, so there was absolutely NO reason for her to touch
anything. She got mad that she got a write up for that
infraction.
There's probably a bunch of others, but these are the things I
can think of off the top of my head.

The people who must hold conversations in front of bathroom
doors, the middle of paths, and other types of entryway.
People who don't turn off the toaster oven when they're done.
The person who shows up at all department's parties to mooch
food.
