Re: So, what's going on with my promotion?

I find it a bit concerning that your last promotion was ten
years ago. I am not certain if you work for the government (?)
but I am not familiar with “grades” aside from that. From your
posts it seems your company does not value what you bring to the
company for whatever reason. I am sure you are a valuable
employee, but for whatever reason your company and Karla (and
Sally) didn’t go to bat for you. All of this is to say I don’t
really know whether the issue is with the company being
strangely run, or with the company just not valuing you for some
reason. I would ask for a promotion now based on what you are
doing now. If you were not promoted years ago when you made
Karla’s job transition possible (for example), I don’t know that
will help you now. Focus on your value now. Best wishes!

So, what's going on with my promotion? UPDATE #11
By: jpcher Date: September 14, 2018, 5:47 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
My 1:1 (I found out that's the way one-on-one is posted) today
was a total shock.
I was prepared with my selling points (thanks to your responses)
most of them being from the past year but didn't even get a
chance to expound on them.
Kathy started by asking if I had any documentation from Karla. I
said "No, everything was verbal."
Kathy then told me that my email to her surprised her because
Karla never talked to her about my promotion. She said that she
did her due diligence and talked to her boss who also said that
a conversation about my promotion never happened between her and
Karla. Kathy told me that she talked to HR and was told that
there is absolutely no record of any type of conversation or
paperwork with them concerning my promotion.
Kathy went on to explain (she's a talker, hard to not interrupt
or get a word in edge-wise) that times for promotions are
mid-year and we've already passed that point. As well as the
budget does not allow promotions at this time. She explained
that promotions come with extra work (I've been doing the extra
work for years!) and went on to talk about job descriptions.
I was able to break in and ask "My work has been above my job
description. I've been doing extra tasks, handling the work
flow, etc. Is there anyway we can keep the momentum of my
promotion going or even start it again from here?"
Kathy responded with "I'm sorry Karla built you up for a
promotion, and I'm sorry to say that it's not possible right
now. We have a tight budget and even I am handling two jobs
(her's and Karla's) I'm not looking for a promotion." and, like
I said she's a talker. She can say the same thing 5 different
ways in one breath.
I let her talk and occasionally interjected an "Okay", "Okay",
"Okay."
Kathy did tell me that she was going to send me the job
descriptions between my grade level now and the next higher
level. So that's a good thing because I've already seen them. I
am performing next level tasks. (I tried to point this out to
her but she wasn't listening ::))
So my next move is to point out via e-mail (document!) what I'm
actually doing at the higher level as opposed to what I should
only be doing at the level where I'm at.
Jem "but I am not familiar with “grades” " -- In my company for
every position there are grade levels that include entry level,
or call it G1 (starting position with little experience) and
grow to G4 with talent, experience, additional tasks above and
beyond others that have the same title as you but are at a lower
grade level. Does that make sense?
Gotta run!

I am so sorry and furious on your behalf. That’s
absolutely ridiculous and I can’t tell if Karla was ly8ng
through her teeth or these folks are jerking you around. I hope
you are mad too and stay mad - they are not the only game in
town. You have more skills and experience than they have the
budget to pay for but that won’t be true everywhere. From
my experience, people often get less when trying to advance
internally than they do when they make a move to another
company. I don’t know the details of your life position,
but I suggest you let this fuel an effort to find another job.
My company has grades too and at a certain point, positions at
higher grades are unobtainable because the people in them are
not going to leave any time soon and extra responsibilities just
get added to the lower grades with no corresponding title bump.
Basically there are too many people eligible for promotions but
not enough spots at higher levels. That’s the point at
which talent starts to leave.

jpcher has 36 years on the job. This is not the time to start a
new job search given her age.

I don’t necessarily agree. When they hire people at
senior levels at my workplace, they aren’t hiring 20
year-olds. The people with experience are often the ones with
decades in the workforce. I’m not saying she should quit,
far from it in fact as she’d have much better luck as
someone who is employed. But right now she is secure but not
thrilled with her current position. It’s the only option
only if she doesn’t check for any others. Maybe she does
check and realize she has it pretty good. Maybe she checks and
finds something preferable. If she doesn’t look at all,
she is just stuck.
Of course a moot point if she wants to stay put and advancement
isn’t crucial to her contentment.

Do you believe her when she says Karla never spoke to her about
it?
I think the excuse "I am working two jobs and not looking for a
promotion" tells you a great deal about her.
Really again want to strongly suggest emailing AskaManager for
advice. She can give you wonderful advice. We are nice and and
all, but this is too important.

Can you phone Karla and ask if she has any advice? This seems
supremely unfair, including the fact that your new boss won't
let you get a word in edgewise.

36 years OTJ is a long time and at this point browzer11 is
correct. I really don't want to look for another job. I think I
can go another 5 years before retirement even though I am
eligible for retirement now. (I joke and say I'm in for another
15 so that I can retire with 50 years at one company. What a
life's accomplishment that would be! ;D)
NyaChan -- I love my job and the people I work with. I receive
bonuses for certain jobs well done (some as low as $25 others
being much higher) and it's the appreciation from my (in house)
clients that makes me want to put the extra effort into each job
even if it is above and beyond my current job description. I
also have the opportunity for growth with my skills which I've
always embraced because it keeps the job interesting, always
something new to learn.
I make a good salary and live a comfortable life. So the point
of the promotion is more for self gratification than need.
I see two choices:
1. Accept Kathy's edict, throw the idea of a promotion out of my
mind, and keep doing what I've been doing all along.
2. Delve a bit more into it in order to find out who is lying to
me. Karla did give me her external hard drive as well as a path
to her computer's hard drive back-up. I need to get access for
her computer's back up, I'll figure out how to do this. I'll
take a look at both of those places and see if I find anything.
If I don't find anything concerning my promotion, then the point
is moot.
If I do find documentation, etc. then I think my move would be
going straight to HR.
I hate to think that Karla was putting on a show all the while
lying to me. What would she have done if she hadn't left the
building?
At the same time I hate to think that Kathy is lying to me.
It's one or the other that was lying. This is what bothers me
the most.

I don't have Karla's personal number. I always contacted her on
her company phone/email.

I don’t think forensic computer investigation is going to help
you, and it may hurt you. For whatever reason, your company has
not given you a promotion in ten years. It does not matter what
Karla said or did not say. Karla is no longer there. And do not
call your current boss out as a liar!
I would ask whoever the decision maker is for the promotion you
seek what you need to do to get a promotion. It seems other
people have gotten promotions at various times. It seems right
now no one is being promoted, but position yourself now for
being promoted when the next opportunity occurs. Forget Karla.
Focus on making yourself the employee the person currently in
charge wants to promote.
