Book Club Etiquette

I am very excited to be joining a book club next month. I have
never participated in this type of activity before, and I was
curious of the finer points of book club etiquette. These
meetings will be held at my local library, and I don't know any
of the other members. Does anyone have any pointers?

All book clubs are different. Some discuss about the book in a
general way. Some analyze each sentence. Some talk about the
book for 15 minutes and then socialize.
The best thing is to sit back and observe the "lay of the land"
the first time you attend.

Based on my book club experience, I'd say
1. Read the book and think about it before the book club to see
if you have questions/thoughts about the book to bring to the
group.
2. Listen to what others have to say.
3. Don't interrupt
4. Try to make sure everyone has a chance to say something
(there are always people who will jump in with a response
immediately, and others who hold back)
As Rose Red said, every book club is different so observe how
this one works and don't try to make it into a different book
club.

Our book club is more about the wine and dessert but that's a
friend one rather than one set up by a library. If it's set up
as a community thing, its probably more focussed on the book and
talking about it than we are. :)

I would like to join your book club. I might even try to read
the book sometimes!
I have nothing to add being that I have never been in a book
club, but the "Observe Method" is a good one for most groups.

The book club is a new program at my library, and I'm glad to be
getting in at the beginning. I was afraid of being overly eager
or excited. Following the good advice I have received, I'm just
going to take it slow and get a feel for it.

From the old e-hell I remember a story about how there were some
people that would try to take over the public book club as it
gave them a place to speak.
So if you see that happening, just say "We haven't heard from
Jane yet, Florence. Let's give some other people a chance to
share. Jane, what did you think about when Jamie rescued Claire
vs. when Claire rescued Jamie?."

We were always told not to put down people in the book club who
happened to not like the book. Everyone gets an opinion whether
pro or con.
