I don't look at names here either but if I'm going to respond
back directly, especially to curse them out, you bet I'm looking
to see who I'm fighting with and keep note of the name.
Twitter moving fast is no excuse, especially when you tag in
NASA and make your account public. Social media has consequences
we never had in decades past. It may have gone viral anyway even
it wasn't an important NASA VIP. Many people got fired because
of videos and Twitter screen shots spreading from average Joes.

Toots, you don't look at the poster whose comment you're
       responding to?
I think that woman should thank her deity and kiss Hickham's
ring for giving her a second chance. Jocular response? Sure, if
she knew who she was posting to, but not only did she not, it
was public. She might be very smart but she's not too bright.

Everybody deserves a second chance (maybe not a third, but...),
and hopefully she's learned her lesson. I hope she gets
reinstated, and is properly grateful for it.

I don't think she should get her internship back. Give it to
someone who isn't a complete moron, someone who knows who Homer
       Hickam is!
How could you be seriously aspiring to work at NASA and not know
who Homer Hickam is? Just boggles my mind.

       He's being way too kind.

Her circle isn't very bright, spreading screenshots of the
exchange after Homer tried to smooth things over & deleted his
       tweets ::)

From what I read it wasn't her friends who made the comments.
This young lady is trans and she was doxxed by some transphobes
with the explicit goal of ruining her life. They were the ones
leaving vulgar comments. Sooooo..... I'm not going to blame her
       for this.

maybe she didn't really look at the name, and just assumed it
was someone in her circle of peers. That was a pretty jocular
response to him--at least, it seemed that way to me.
I know when I'm reading here, I don't really look to see who
wrote the post most of the time. Sometimes I can tell who it is
by their style, and I'll check to verify. Or I'll want to
directly respond. But I usually don't bother.
Twitter moves fast, so maybe she just responded without looking
       to see who it was.

I agree with this. Her comment didn't come across as mean to me,
but something someone excited would say.

I know people who have worked at NASA and wouldn't know Homer
Hickam from a tennis ball. So that doesn't shock me. And
dropping, "Language" made him come off like a public scold,
especially when it's coming from a total stranger. I think he
could have handled the situation much better.

He wasn't scolding her, he was warning her.
What idiot doesn't realize that using the F-word in the same
sentence as the government agency that you just got a position
with is a stupid thing to do?! Especially a government agency
that has a long history of being rather sensitive about how the
people who work for it represent it in public.
SHE could have handled it better from the beginning by not doing
what she did! SHE caused her own problem. And then she
compounded it by being profane and nasty to a stranger. He
bears absolutely no responsibility for her screwing herself over
       like that.
Her Twitter was public. It was just an incredibly stupid thing
       for her to do.

Of course I don’t know the young lady in question, but I have to
ask: If someone is dumb enough to do the above, perhaps she’s
too dumb to be trusted with things that can go boom.

Maybe. But I've known people who are brilliant in one area and
completely hopeless in another. The absent-minded professor is a
       stereotype for a reason. :D
